When does the can belt really need changing?

I say really as I remember a thread where someone said they had info from Germany that the can belt is to be changed at over 100,000 miles not the five year interval.

My R is at 43,000 miles and is 5yrs old in June.
VW rang me other day to suggest I get it done.

Thoughts/experiences?

On cars registered after 9/2009 it gets changed at 5 years or 120k miles, whichever occurs first.

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/serv ... elt-change" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So, for the majority it's every 5 years.

For reference the R and the diesels have belts, the others have chains.

The defined time limit is from VW UK. The service booklet only quotes the mileage limit, which comes from the factory.

Did you do the water pump at the same time as that's cheap if they did?
