Has anyone noticed, when using around 2-3k throttle, and giving it some, the you get a kind of raspy noise from under the bonnet? Normally i wouldnt notice it but becuase everything else is so refined, i wondered if it was a problem. It doesnt seem to affect anything, it can just be annoying when i dont have the radio on. I have a dsg box but would be interested to hear from any one
Thanks

FSI makes all sorts of funny noises, added to that noises from the turbo and there's quite a feww things it could be,all perfectly normal.
The normally aspirated FSI units sound very much like diesels when started and when you bog them down and give it some, especially the 1.6 FSI,quite disconcerning but apparently normal. It's to do with the direct injection gubbins (highly technical explanation there
)

Is it a ticking kind of rattling noise, bit like a diesel? If so it's normal, they all do it apparently, only happens when you catch it right, bog it down at low revs and give it some throttle,or when idling.
When you say rasping noise, does it sound like the turbo? Could be that.
If you're worried then have a VW tech listen to it some time, they'll be familiar with all the funny noises these engines make. Not easy to describe a noise over the internet.

no its definately not like a diesel noise, its more raspy, i do suspect its the turbo, its just so much louder than everything else, i thought there might be a problem, i might get vw to listen to it at some point, its not urgent

Mine does this too - was very disconcerting the first time I heard it as it happened just after I red lined it for the first time!

Sorry to revive such an old post, I remember reading it a while back.
I have noticed my manual is making a kind of rasping noise under hardish-er accelleration. I have done 2700 miles now and I guess today is one of the first times I have driven without music on so I am not too sure if its allways done it!
Are people stil getting this and its normal or do I need to be worried
After recent events I don't really want to take it back to VW any time soon!

I think it's just turbo or induction noises, you can hear the turbo on mine quite a bit. Does it sound happy? I'm sure it's probably fine.

Yep think it is just the turbo spooling up, seems to come in on mine at the same time as the boost.

I had this and it has now gone since I played with the heat shield on the exhaust.
It rattles at certain revs.
Just go under the car and bend it a little.
Problem solved.
My last car did it too.

I've noticed mine making a metallic rattling at certain revs under acceleration too,the exhaust heat shield makes sense - I'll have a look.

Hi All,
I have the same described metallic rattle, under load at low-mid revs.... I had it on a ramp yesterday, tinkered with the exhaust shield to no avail
I'm going to take it back to the dealer to investigate - I'm convinced it isn't anything to do with direct injection etc.... it has to be some sort of shield?!

Took mine back to the dealer today! It happens from 2200rpm - 2800rpm. i had Mk5 Gti before the roc with basically the same engine and it didn't do it on the golf!
Other guys here think its the water pump and its perfectly normal! The VW Mechanic tended to agree with that, but then again he confessed that its only been out a short time so VW are still learning about the cars little querks!
The best bet is for everyone who notices this problem (its happening with both manual and DSG) to take it down to the dealers and hopefully with enough reports on thier books VW might look into it a bit further!
I wouldn't worry about it too much, i've had mine 3 months and it hasn't got any worse and performance isn't effected! Its just a bit annoying!

I've just been out for a spin and left the music off... loving the sound of the exhaust note, but noticed this rasping sound between 2,200 - 2,800rpm- it seems a lot of you have this but does anyone
not have it?
it just sounds like something is loose

Anyone have any updates on this as I've got exactly the same 'Metallic Rattle' when putting my foot down. I've tried to see if I could get to the exhaust heat shield as mentioned above but I'm not too sure exactly what I'm doing so obviously don't wanna go bending stuff I shouldn't be!
