Scirocco Central

Hello,
I’m new to this form, I’ve been saving hard for month and months and finally next month I’m able to afford a Scirocco
I’ve had my mind set on a 2.0 TDI or a 2.0 TDI GT, till yesterday as my mate has the Scirocco R 2.0 TDI bluemotion , as he was saying the others aren’t very economical
My only query is I drive 22.4 miles a week (which is 3.2 miles) a day to work and back)
Is it worth me getting a diesel or shall I get a petrol?
I was thinking the Bluemotion as I know the road tax is a lot cheaper and probably be cheaper to run
I just don't want to invest a lot of money into a car that isn't going to get its full use
Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or shed some light
I currently drive a Corsa sxi cdti 1.3

With such a low mileage, a petrol one would be a better bet.

Depends on how old the car is going to be. Too many horror stories with the 1.4tsi, 2.0tsi would be my choice for your useage.

22 miles a week sounds like a dream!
I do 40miles a day in a 2.0 TSI. I just drive it economically but i know i got the power when i need it.

If you were doing high milage i'd say a diesel just for economy but with such low miles, go all out and get the petrol.

Just pay ya tax monthly.

The engine is more responsive in a petrol. I found the 2.0 tdi in my passat cc really sluggish on acceleration but the roc goes like a stabbed rat.

would you say the 2.0 tsi is still economical?

For 22 miles a week get the petrol.

A tank quotes me 350 miles on the dash, so it would take you nearly 4 months to use a tank haha

All the engines are good but for those miles you may aswell go for a 2.0 tsi. Its not expensive if you have a gentle right foot, but it will give you a bigger smile on your face

Only worth considering diesel from my research if you do more than £15k per year. As previously said I would avoid an older 1.4 due to horror stories about failing engines etc. I get an average 350 miles out of a £55 tank full of petrol in my 2.0 tsi. Last fill up when light came on was £54.03 for 47 litres so again if I average 350 miles for the tank that would be 10.34 gallons = 33.85mpg or 15.4p per mile

I've got the 2.0 TDI and cover an average 12 mile each way commute, but frequently have longer distance journeys (200m or more each way). My annual mileage was 11,000 but now creeping closer to 14,000. I tend to keep my car for many years so depreciation is less of an issue.

When it comes to MPG, I would expect your journeys to work out similar whether it is petrol or diesel - certainly in terms of £ spent on fuel every month. Something that I have been told about the diesels - and experienced to an extent - is that unless the engine fully warms up and runs "at normal temperature" for a while, you are going to suffer diesel exhaust filter issues with soot clogging. The regeneration thing the engine program does makes the normal tickover RPM higher (closer to 1000 rpm on regen as opposed to 750 normal) and the car keeps asking you to use lower gears than you'd like, to keep the engine producing heat - burning off the soot from the filters.

I am told a knackered Diesel Particulate Filter can be quite costly to replace !

Petrol should be a lot easier to tolerate since there's no regen and I would echo comments about the 1.4 TSI engine and the many horror stories doing the rounds - not just from Scirocco drivers but other VW cars.

If you want to do the maths, work out your average annual mileage, apply a sensible average MPG (perhaps 27 in 2.0 petrol, 35 in diesel) and then work out the number of litres you would buy. Price them up using today's pump prices and I'd be surprised if the cost difference between the two is worth getting excited about.

Then go get the 2.0TSI petrol and enjoy the extra oomph ! ! !

3 miles a day? You may aswell get an R or 2.0 tsi and just use a bicycle to get to work, such low mileage on a diesel would not warrant the fuel prices and the engine would not be getting hot enough to be economical. Petrol i'd say. Then you get more money for parts/upgrades, fuel for when you do drive and keeps you active. Win win really!

As above I echo the comments made. 2.0 Tsi gt or Rline whichever you can afford. I wouldn't touch the 1.4s with a bargepole. Heard and read to many horror stories.

TBH though I travel 52 miles a week just to work and back without going anywhere else. I don't really need a diesel but I bought one due to me thinking it would be better on fuel etc and better in the long run For me. If I could go back time I would buy the 2.0 Tsi. I don't do the miles to Warrent a diesel but never mind. Still got more torques than a petrol!

I would love a scirocco r, but just unfortunately couldn't afford one lol

if i go for the petrol model the 2.0 tsi, should i be worried about high mileage or the year of the car

my misses is still saying to me that ill be putting a tenner in the car every few days, where as im use to probably putting in my corsa (which is diesel 1.3 sxi) a tenner a week!

Possibly but it depends on how you drive the car. If you're heavy footed then obviously you will use more fuel and especially with a cold engine as 3 miles will not normally get an engine to optimum running temp. Therefore using more fuel so £10 every few days could be realistic. 2.0 tsi is a car that will need a good drive and a blast every now and then so it gets nice and hot and helps gets rid of any crap not burnt away from short, cold engine journeys.....and feels epic when working the turbo! Its a car that needs a good workout aswell as the commute, look after it and it'll serve you well. Look for the lowest mileage possible within budget, and year of the car is what you prefer model wise and price wise. Weigh up all your options and concerns, pros and cons then its upto you to buy or not to buy Plus everyone on the forum is always more than happy to help!

Going from a 1.3 diesel corsa I think you will probably find yourself driving around for no particular reason if you get a 2.0 Tsi just for the fun of it so bound to affect how much you are spending on petrol!
