Hello, new to the forum, just purchased a vw scirocco 2010 2.0 petrol, my query is the temp sits at About 70 to 80° then when I give the car abit of stick it rises to about 90° then as Im stood it drops back down to 70 - 80 and will randomly rise to about 90 does everybodys do this ? Or does everybody else's rise to 90 and just stop there? Because I think I may have a sticking thermostat if so cheers for any help greatly appreciated

Once mine gets to 90 it usually just stays there.

Cheers Andy, you've never seen it drop once it's up to 90 because my old audi tt was at a constant 90

The temp gauge does not display a real time value but is "corrected" to display 90 when the coolant temp is between 75 and 105.

If yours is doing what you say, it could have been set using vagcom to display real time as it's an option. Could also point to a faulty sensor or thermostat sticking open.

Probably a faulty sensor or thermostat stick as even though the temp gauge doesn't display the real value, the real temp is usually around (mostly above) 90ºC. Mine runs almost always at 97ºC, and starts to go up from there if I floor it for a bit.. :)

I'm thinking its a sticking thermostat it shouldn't move around like it does from a technical view the engine should get up to temp as quickly as possible and maintain that and it's just not doing that, has anybody ever changed a thermostat it's the one under the intake on the right hand side of the engine as you look at it from the front ?

Just thought I would give a update found the problem was the thermostat took hour and half to fit and bleed out cooling system, temp gauge now sits nicely at a constant 90, thank you all for your advice

Hi

I have exactly the same symptoms on my 2.0tdi and yesterday had the thermostat replaced.

Driving home tonight under load it reached 85 but on a long down hill it dropped to 70.

The symptoms say thermostat but as I now have a brand new one, I'm thinking its something else. Any ideas?

Having problems with my temp gauge too. Mine goes to 90 , but seems to drop to 80ish randomly and climb back up again slowly and repeats

Mine stays between 92 - 100 in normal driving regardless of the traffic conditions.

If not the thermostat then I'd suggest the temperature sensor. It's usually one or the other

When temp gauge is going up and down it usually means the TPS is faulty in the majority of cases ... It could be the thermostat but the TPS is easier and cheaper to replace first!

I had a TPS go on my Audi TT, and when that failed it would make it look like car was overheating similar system to scirocco, I bought a cheap one from eBay and fitted it and it gave a incorrect reading of about 75 -80, a lot easier to change than a thermostat

It certainly does sound like thermostat it is a dual stage thermostat they fitted ? VW dealer fit it ? None gen had a few options and where unsure which it had which didn't fill me with confidence so I go one from VW
