Hi,

Im supposed to be picking up a RNS 510 on Tuesday.

My worry is will it be compatible??

My Roc is early 2009 ( Red MFD ) i currently have RCD510

What exactly do i need to do?? Is it not plug and play??

What versions needed....??

Ive heard battery drain issues and steering wheel buttons not working etc etc

I dont want to pay £500 for something thats not going to work.

Thanks
Paul

I'm sure once you have swapped the rcd out for the rns you need to recode the car using vcds.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge on this subject can confirm.

What confusing is most sellers on eBay state "plug and play" 15 minute install.

Install isnt a problem for me, i just want everything to work with it.

I could well be but Iv got a feeling it needs re coding .

Most sellers say that so you just buy it knowing it's going to work straight away.
Good selling tip. Seen this all before

I changed my head unit to an RNS 510 when i had my golf and it just plugged in and worked straight away with no coding, all i needed was the security code of the unit, and an antenna adaptor for the navigation to work

Also it doesnt matter which version you get, they will all work, its just anything after version C (star button top left) is more desireable because they are more upgradeable

Some sellers on eBay state that they will recode the unit (RNS 510) to the buyers needs. For example if you have a rear view camera installed or parking sensors etc. they will code the unit for these functions to work, is this correct? or is it the vehicles computer that is recoded and not the head unit.

It should plug and play... You have a red MFD, so coding for navigation display on MFD isnt needed. Not sure why you would need to code steering wheel functions, all that stuff is hard wired into the harness.

Buy it, plug it in and you should be fine

I changed RCD510 for RNS510 earlier this year and yes you can just plug and play. But my car is late 2010 so has the white MFD so a bit unsure on the red MFD. Also my steering wheel buttons worked straight off too, but again I have the new flat bottom steering wheel so unsure on the older style wheel and buttons.

I did use VCDS to configure the MFD to display the Navigation instructions, I would recommend this as it saves you looking over at the screen of the RNS510, just look down beside the dials and you can see distance until next turn off and journey times etc. Just remember when you have done this config change you have to pull the fuse for the MFD to reset it, not sure why this is I just googled it and this was the fix. There is a topic in the forum with fuse numbers as it depends on what type of fuse box you have.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I may be able to answer. A few guides I read mentioned to take out the air vents to mount the GPS receiver above them, but I just mounted it underneath the vents and I have never had a problem with low GPS signal.

didnt think red MFD had the capability to display NAV instructions, this is why I said coding isnt necessary. But if anyone has seen a red MFD that displays nav info, let me know.

The battery drain issue (I dont think anyone touched this), is to do with a certain CANBUS for build years below a threshold, and I am sorry, I dont actually remember the cut off year, but I think that info is on mygti website.

I am surprised martynk87 had to reboot MFD, as my car is the same year and I didnt have to do that

yes i was unsure on the red MFD, i was just saying what i had to do on my white MFD to give some info.

I have heard about the drain issue but i have not done any research into this as it does not affect my car.

I just googled it again and it reminded me, it was not the NAV i had to pull the fuse for, it was the audio menu on the MFD. Here is the link to solution i found, it is in the 2nd post - http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137272" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks guys some good info.

I have seen red MFD on a golf show nav instructions so you would say it's possible.

So if i buy ANY rns 510 it should be plug and play??

Also another quick question, I haven't got my RCD510 code in all my paperwork. Can i still sell it on or will it ask when re connected??

Thanks

Paul

The RCD510 will ask for the code, unless it's fitted to the car it was supplied with from the factory. Some VW dealers will give you the code if you tell them the serial number of the unit and the VIN / Reg of the car it was supplied in. Others try to charge for it. After around 2007 VW stopped giving the code.with.a new car as the unit is paired to the car and the code is not needed if the battery is disconnected, only if it's removed and fitted into another car.

Well a least i can re-fit to my car when sold and recoup RNS510 monies :)

I called my local VW Dealer and they gave me the code for free. If i can remember correctly all you need is the serial number of the RCD510 and the VIN number of your car. I have also seen some adverts on ebay offering the same service for under £10 if you are unable to get the code from the dealer.

I sold my RCD510 on ebay and managed to get around £150 for it.
