Kinli's Scirocco R - Stage 2+

I thought I would share some info about my Scirocco project as I've done the same with my past cars. Hopefully there is some useful stuff here.

I bought this car about a year ago with just 13.000km on the clock. It's a 2012 Scirocco R with a DSG box and it was totally stock when I got it.

The R model was never officially sold in Finland and this one is actually imported from Italy. There is only 4 Rs in Finland which was one of the main selling points for me.
My last car was imported from Japan (a Honda Integra Type-R DC5) and it was the first one of it's kind in my country so I'm obviously kinda drawn to the special ones. :)

Even thought the R is very capable in stock form, it didn't take too long before I got it flashed to stage 1... After that things escalated quite rapidly and now this car is a very different piece of machinery...

Standard options:
• Sunroof
• Cruise control
• ACC Suspension
• 19" talladega
• RNS-510
• Rear parking sensor
• Rain sensor
• Folding mirrors
• Smokers package

Engine:
• APR Stage 2+ software (v3.4)
• APR DSG Software (v1.4)
• APR HPFP
• APR RSC turboback exhaust
• EVOMS heatshield
• VWR intake
• Mishimoto heatshielding for the intake pipe
• Neuspeed Hi-Flow turbo discharge kit
• Neuspeed Hi-Flow intercooler air charge pipe
• Boost tap for the gauge

Interior:
• Audio upgrade (Focal PS165 front, Helix 2x7" "sparewheel" sub, Helix Match PP52 DSP amp)
• Dynamat in the doors, trunk and under the rear seat
• Passat chrome glove box opener
• Passat window / trunk switches
• All interior bulbs changed to LEDs
• OEM Aux / media-in center console with arm rest
• Soundaktor disabled
• P3 Cars - Vent Integrated Digital Interface

Suspension:
• VWR springs
• VWR rear ARB (stiffest setting)
• SuperPro Performance Control Arms
• TyrolSport DeadSet Rigid Subframe Collar Kit
• Michelin Pilot SuperSport tyres
• For the winter: 18" R8 replica + Nokian Hakkapelitta R2 tyres

Things I don't like:
• Lack of a proper LSD. One-wheel-drive is quite annoying after the DC5 (and a EP3 /w LSD). The XDS is a joke compared to a real LSD and nobody wants to open up a DSG box for a LSD install (at least in Finland).
• Unequal driveshafts. Why oh why? Retrofit is doable using Golf TDI parts, but this should be standard from factory considering the amount of torque.
• Scraping the front bumper. It's quite low and long, so steep ramps are an issue, especially after the springs but this is just something getting used to.
• Turbo lag. It's better now after the mods, but obviously I will always miss a highly tuned NA engine.
• Compressor flutter (or whatever it's called). I know it's a limiting factor of the Rs K04 turbo and isn't harmful but it's still very annoying.
• Lack of top-end power. I guess stage 3 would solve this but that's a no-go for a single-wheel-driven car.
• DSG. When it's guessing my next move correctly - it's superfast. When incorrect - it's deadslow.
• Cam follower. Who came up with this stupid design?
• Frameless windows + Finnish winter = pain in the ass.
• DSG pedals. The brake pedal is at least a meter higher than the loud pedal. idiotic.
• RNS-510. This is top-of-the-line? Just waaay too slow by todays standard.
• Steering wheel could be closer...

Things I love:
• The looks. The Scirocco is a good looking car. The Scirocco R is a Stunningly good looking car.
• The APR RSC sound. Silent when cruising, proper mad when it needs to be.
• The power. I don't know how much it has at the moment but judging by my front tires I would say about 1000bhp!
• Build quality. Seems solid so far.
• DSG. ok as stock, amazingly fast after the flash.
• All the cool gadgets like heated seats(!!), folding mirrors, rain sensor, sunroof, etc. (the Hondas where quite simple in this area...)
• VCDS. Endless fun adjusting everything.
• Comfort. Nice as stock. Still nice after mods + very nice & clean audio.
• The car as a package. A very good compromise on all fronts. I suspect I'm going to hang on to this car for a long time. :)

Obviously I ain't done yet...

For the future:
• APR Runner Flap Delete (awaiting installation)
• Retrofit Golf TDI equal length driveshafts
• Engine mounts
• Match PP82 DSP amp
• Brake upgrade (either BBK or TyrolSport riggid collars, Two piece discs, better pads, hoses and liquids)
• Front ARB
• Beefier rear ARB
• Facelift steering wheel
• Longer forward / backward adjustment for the steering wheel
• Brake pedal adjustment

The pics are before the VWR springs.

Did you upgrade the soundsystem on your own?

Thanks!

I did the sound damping stuff myself, but left the speaker / amp / sub install for the professionals.

I'm very happy with the result at the moment but at higher sound levels the amp becomes the bottleneck, hence the reason for thinking about upgrading to a more powerful same series DSP amp.

Now this is how it should be done! Tasteful mods, all of good quality. Lovely bit of kit. I've been thinking about changing those intercooler pipes. Do you have any issues with space? they're so restrictive!

Thanks! :)

The discharge pipe is quite easy to fit and there is plenty of room around it. The charge air pipe however is a different story... It's a very tight fit, but doable. I believe that the discharge pipe is a more relevant upgrade than the charge air pipe so I would start with that one.

It's quite basic stuff, bigger pipe, less restriction = better flow. The biggest gain (I'd guess) is from the new discharge adapter. The oem piece is quite restrictive and unoptimized for flow as it also works as a minimuffler for the turbocharger.

Thanks!
Stage 2+ is obviously great. I don't think I will ever need more power in this car. :)

The vwr intake is a bit so-so. I don't like the fact that the pipe is made out of metal (hence the heatshielding), but otherwise it is great and much more sensible than the openfiltered EVOMS I had before.

The APR RSC is defo my favourite part. It sounds almost stock with some added gurgles / pops when driving normaly, but when you give it some... VERY raw!
I know there is a lot of shit about apr floating around the interweb at the moment, but I couldn't care less. The parts work exactly as advertised and that's all I need.

The DSG flash was a must for me. I hated the way the stock DSG jumped directly into 6th gear as soon as possible and the small delay between pressing the button and the DSG actually performing the shift was super annoying too. All sorted now with the flash! :)
