Scirocco Central

Hi!

I'm a Swedish Scirocco-owner and I've had my car for over a year now (2011 model, 1.4 TSI, DSG7 - bought it almost new though). I absolutely love it and haven't had any problems with it until a couple of days ago.

A message - 'Check oil level!' - popped up on the MFI which of course made me pretty nervous. I popped the hood, checked the oil stick and the oil level was fine. Closed the hood and the message was gone. Haven't come across the message for a couple of days now until yesterday. Same message (during cold start), checked the oil level - fine. Waited until the engine was warm and checked again - fine. The car has been served at VW according to the service plan and got new oil 11 months ago.

Has anyone experienced this problem as well? Should I be concerned or is this an easy task to fix? Do I have to take the car to the dealer?

Sounds like some kind of sensor issue assuming oil level is all fine and car is running correctly. I would take it into the dealer and let them diagnose it.

also, you say you checked the oil level when the engine was warm?

oil level should be checked on flat, level ground with a cold engine ideally

I had this error a couple of times.... i checked the oil and the level was fine... its very odd. put a drop in, don't over fill it, the error should hopefully go away.

Danfalcon is right, you should really check when the engine has been off for a while as this gives the oil level chance to settle down.

The car is running correctly – there's nothing strange at all except the message.

When the engine has been off for a while (over night for example) the oil level is perfect the morning after. I really hope it's just an issue with the oil level sensor – will definitely take the car to the nearest VW dealership tomorrow morning. I'll keep you posted!

Just got back from my local VW dealer. Got a new oil level sensor. They said that the old one might have taken some damage due to our climate reaching below –15 C during winter time, but it sounds a bit odd to me. I'm glad it wasn't more serious than a sensor replacement, let's hope the new one will do the trick!

Glad it is sorted, although you would expect these sensors to have a very wide operating temperature range, I guess it is possible weather extremes can damage sensitive components but they should be designed to cope with that. Hopefully not too expensive unless you are still within warranty.
