Ticking from wheel

I replaced my front discs and pads yesterday and everything went well although I didn't torque the caliper bolts enough so did that this morning.

I had to put a lot of force behind the torque spanner to get 200nm when I tightened the caliper bolts. When I took the car for a test drive there is a loud ticking sound from the front driver's side wheel. It only happens over 20mph and doesn't stop ticking when I brake.

I don't think it made a ticking sound yesterday before I tightened the bolts more, so I think whatever I have done happened today. What have I damaged, the wheel bearing? Could it be the CV joint – it happens when I drive in a straight line as well as turn?

I'm going to take it in to my local garage in the morning. It could be a number of things which I haven't got time to diagnose at the moment and I don't feel confident driving it in case it's something major. Will report back.

My guess is that you may have disturbed the wheel speed sensor.

Sorry, I didn't see your reply last night Cuprabob. Thanks for that.

What I did do last night is go out and torque the wheel bolts again. This morning as I was driving to the garage, there was no noise. The garage was late opening so I decided to take it for a spin. Then when there was still no noise, I drove to work.

It seems like the noise must have been a wheel bolt that was looser than the others, although there wasn't much if any movement on the torque wrench when I retightened them.

So all in all a fantastic result. Of all the things it could have been, I'll take a loose nut any day. Will retighten them again at the weekend once they've bedded in a bit.
