Hi all , just picked up a 2010 2.0 tsi gt and its fantastic , However it has an annoying whine that increases with the revs. It seems to be from the drivers side engine bay area.
Any help would be helpful.

thanks in advance

I *think* I might know what you mean, a sort of low to medium frequency whine which you can only hear when manoeuvring slowly (e.g. parking) that just goes up and down a bit with the revs but is hardly obtrusive. Mine does that and I've never taken much notice of it but I can't honestly say if it's always done it or if it's something newish.

Hi Bill , I don't think its the same noise as this is quite loud and can be heard even when driving. I thought it might be a bearing in the alternator or A/C compressor perhaps

With out hearing it, its going to be hard to diagnose, the engine shouldn't whine, water pumps are common on these and do give a whining noise when they go faulty. The pump is located on the front of the engine, can you he hear the noise around that area?

I will try and get a video on youtube tomorrow which should help. The noise happens over 1800rpm while driving and in neutral at stand still.

I get an initial loudish whine on a cold start up which disappears within a second however I do hear a light whine when the windows are down. Is this normal or something that needs checking out?

Mine is making a very similar noise and had been for some time. As this engine is not the quietest, I thought the noise was normal. However after reading your post I've decided differently.
On mine you can hear the noise better when driving with the window down, the pitch increases and decreases with the revs. So must be related to drivetrain and not turbo. I went to vw yesterday and they agreed it wasn't normal. I've done a bit of digging on the web and think it maybe a water pump issue.
It's in vw for service and mot next week so I've asked them to look into it as it's under warranty. I also popped into a friends garage yesterday and we put a long bladed screwdriver to the pump and revved the engine with my ear on the end of the driver and you could hear the whine, I'm sure this is the problem. I'll report back once vw have finished looking at it.

Tbh it does sound like the common water pump issue, would be easier to locate the noise from underneath as that's where the water pump is.

I think i might have found the culprit .The noise seems to be coming from the aux belt tensioner. Can anybody tell me how to remove the tensioner. I have the belt off but can't see how it is attached.

Removing the full tensioner can be a pain, but it's easier just to remove the pully from the tensioner, if I remember correctly it's a t45 torx bolt to remove it.

It's on the front of the pulley, I'm sure there is a small black cap covering it, so just remove that and you'll see the bolt :-)

Thanks all , the tensioner pulley was at fault. I have now changed it and all is well.

I've had my 2009 Reg TSi 2.0 for about 3 years now and it has a metal spring like rattle under acceleration at about 2,000 to 2,300 rpm. Drives me nuts!!!

Would like to here from anyone with the same issue.

I have heard someone say that it might be the exhaust gas pulsator flap on wastegate and yet I see others here saying that they had rattles from the bonnet lock and the under tray, and even the coolant pipe against the air intake.

It's in for a service next week so I'll get them all checked out. Will report back.

Sounds like you have the waste gate rattle.
