Which rocco?

Hi guys, recently joined the forum as im on the lookout for a rocco. I had my heart set on a 2.0 tdi 170 with dsg, but finding one is proving hard. The reason i chose this was for the mix of good mpg and performance also the tax is much lower. I only do about 3-4 miles in an average day but once every couple of months i travel to see family a so its around a 2-300 mile round trip. BUT... now im starting to consider the 2.0 tsi dsg as they are more common and most come with leather. My question is what should i expect mpg wise on short journeys and on a run out of the tsi? Should i hold out and stick to my gut feeling of the 170 tdi or swap for the petrol?? I keep changing from petrol to diesel and always say ill never have petrol again! Cheers

3 miles a day in a diesel? What?
IMO that makes no sense.
On the MPG front people seen to get 35 on a good motorway run out of a 2.0 tsi and mid 20s knocking around town. But someone else who owns one will be able to say better.
Have you thought about a 1.4 160 petrol? They are almost identically as fast as the diesel but do closer to 40mpg

Doing 3-4 miles a day in a diesel, as said above, makes no sense what so ever. Firstly it will never get up to.operating temperature plus there is a high probability of DPF issues as it.will never get a chance to regenerate.
Petrol is the way forward, although 3-4 miles will have it barely getting up to temperature so economy will be poor.

I completly understand where your both coming from, mileage is so low i wont benefit from good mpg, but when i do go on trips to family or on holiday i feel that im getting hard done by with only 35mpg where a diesel will get about 45-50mpg. I will me making more regular trips to sheffield and wales (from west mids) so i dont want it to cost me a fortune in fuel. Ive just sold my 120d which was getting around 27-30mpg around town, before that i had a renaultsport megane which was getting around 19, which is why i swapped back to diesel, that and the tax was high, imo. I really dont know which way to turn now, what you save on one hand you give with the other. Really i need some hard factual mpg figures on the tsi and not magazine figures

That trip to Sheffield will cost you about £4 more in the petrol, which don't get me wrong, is nothing to be sniffed at. But when you consider the fact you will pay more to buy the derv, and the hassle you will have because you are jacking up the DPF by using it for 3 mile journeys, it's a no brainer. Get the petrol. A Diesel is not worth it just for the odd long journey.

What about a dpf removal? Also the difference in insurance premiums and road tax? Overall, which would be the best buy? At the moment im not keeping a car more than 12 months and id now like a car for a while as im sick of chopping and changing because im not happy

DPF removal is an MOT failure if the car was fitted with one from factory. It would suggest doing the sums on different models. That way you can work out rough running costs each year for each model. And I would still suggest you don't exclude the 160.
Consider:
Fuel - work out your annual mileage, as a rule of thumb, if your doing most of your miles in town (which it sounds like you are) 2.0 petrol: 27mpg, 1.4 petrol: 35, derv: 45. Those numbers are very rough, but it will give a comparison at least.
Tax - each are different, as you know
Insurance - get quotes for all three
Cost to buy - the derv is generally the most expensive, followed by the 1.4, there are some great deals on 2.0 around.
It will give you the ability to make a real informed choice.

You want hard nosed 2.0TSi DSG figures? Try these from me, a section of my costing spreadsheet which records all fuel purchased and mileage covered. These are the average numbers of about 3.5 years of ownership and covering mostly short journeys (<20 miles) with the occasional longer trip of 200+ miles. These are actuals, not figures off the MFD. I don't drive like a nutter but not like a monk either. Best tankful was at 37mpg.

My 2.0TSi DSG averages anywhere between 25-42 mpg depending on the type and length of journey and how fast it's driven.
It's far more economical than I expected it to be.

I've just done a 165 mile motorway trip in mine and got 51 mpg out of it, sat at 75 on cruise control with a couple if roadwork sections, mine is a 1.4 160
