Used prices... Hang on a moment.

If any of you have seen my other posts you will know I am in the market for a Scirocco (after changing my mind a number of times, the 160 TSI)
My ideal car would be rising blue with 18" interlagos. To buy this car new with those two options is 23k (list). However using a service such as carwow I have had offers in the region of 18k (when financed with VW so 2K deposit contribution). To buy this car used, with low miles is around 14k. Sooooo, that's a 3 year 78% value retention. That is crazy.
I'm guessing I'm getting such low quotes from dealers due to the new Rocco coming soon, but why isn't the used market reflecting the new prices? Do you think it will start to?

Retained values are based on list - not what you may be able to get as a discount. The deposit contribution is to keep sales up in the run up to the new 'facelifted' versions introduction.
Whether it still makes sense as new purchase right now is debatable - when is the cut off point for the new model - ie at what point are they taking orders?
The used market will not significantly reflect this until used examples of the new car are around.....
You may be better with new with as large a discount as that - you will also get a better finance rate on a new one.

I've made enquiries about ordering a new Scirocco. I was told that the order book is closed for the current model and it may be some time before they can take an order for a face lifted model.

Interesting response from nuroc.
That said, like you Waspy, I was surprised at the discounts now being offered by the likes of Orangewheels, who are suggesting 5K off list as well (though now with the important caveat of having to take up the VW finance option for the inclusive 2K discount).
I'm looking to upgrade, and have come to the conclusion that unless the dealer was to take account of the current satiation when discussing the screen price then I should wait until the new rocs come out, so forcing their hand. I suspect, in addition, that there will be more two and three year old cars around then than there is now, with further effect on price.
Always remember, as well, that a dealer's mark-up is not insignificant (up to 3K or so, in cases). For any car that been around for three months (not unusual for Rocs), they'll take a good haircut to move along their depreciating stock. My car had been around for 3 months, which I knew by doing cached Google searches on key words in the ad. I got it for 85% of the original screen price.
In this respect, the gap in price between new and used may be larger than you perceive until you've had the odd haggle or two to test the market. They'll have to think you're serious though, to offer you a good deal. Wait until they say 'I'm afraid we won't be able to do a deal today, at that price", and then see how they respond when you say "Shame, I had the my target amount in cash all ready to hand over; never mind" - and wait for the follow-up call the next day.

Interesting. Curious as to why dealers are making me offers on a new build scirocco then. The £2k contribution from VW is valid until the end if June. As previously mentioned, this is likely an incentive to stop people waiting for the face lift. And therefore I had guessed orders on facelifed sciroccos would begin in July.
I personally am not interested in a new facelift model. The engine choices aren't ideal for me I don't think. Anyway, by the by, it would be an interesting move for VW to introduce an offer valid for a time period in which they are not taking orders of any kind... Perhaps it is just your dealer?
And thanks for the response Moulin, I had noticed about dealers scrambling to sell old stock. My local dealer was offering some handsome discounts on a 140 tdi they needed shifting. Shame it's the model I was least likely to buy.

3k ish via brokers appears to the general amount dealers are able to discount new mid and high priced VW's. A similar amount can be had off a new factory built golf for example. I've got quotes of between 2.5k and 3.8k off a new Golf R to put the current discount situation into perspective.
The 2k finance contribution is really just VW trying to move on stock and any remaining production slots prior to the order books opening for the facelift.

When you say £2.5 to £3.8 off a Golf R - the same model? What percentage are we talking here?
My GTD was 12% off for example....

Called a dealer and order books have indeed closed. Annoying, the 2k contribution was a bit of a deal breaker and like I say, I'm not sure there is an engine which suits me in the new one. Damn.

The best quotes I've got on a Golf R with the same specs are below these are 10.1% to 8.3% off with no finance or other contribution:
5dr DSG £31,975
Metallic - Lapis blue £535
Additional Options £5,340
total rrp £37,850
Offers where/are
1. your offer £34,383 your saving £3,467
2. your offer £34,383 your saving £3,467
3. your offer £34,971 your saving £2,879
These are IHMO strong discounts for new to the market car with restricted availability and long lead times, delivery quoted as July/Aug. Offers are from three different dealer groups and more than one franchise of each quoted the same figure. The 3.8k discount was for a slighly higher spec (carbon leather).
I understand from asking that the Scirocco order book is still open but only for dealers with remaining unsold allocation.

I've just purchased a new Scirocco with the £2K finance discount. I didn't really want/need finance but the deal was better with it.
I am still in the 14 day cooling off period and wonder if I can just cancel it and pay it off without having to refund the £2K.
I've read all the small print and there is nothing in my contract that seems to link the £2K discount to the finance agreement.
I did find it quite tricky tracking down the exact model I wanted because stocks are selling out. My local dealer in the midlands had to collect it from Yorkshire.

If your are on VW finance there is a minimum period before you can exit by settling.
The "discount" will not have been accounted for as a discount on the invoice price between the dealer than VWFS so the 2k discount will be payable if you try to walk away from the finance under a cooling off period. It'll have been accounted as "manufacturers contribution" or "VWFS contribution" and technically post paid against the transaction.

That may be true but if the contract paperwork does not mention this anywhere how can they make me pay it back?
The paperwork also makes no mention of a minimum period - it says I can settle in part or full at any time

It depends on how your agreement has been structured however usually VWFS apply the discount as a partial payment in month 3 of the deal.
You can walk away or settle at any point just do not expect the manufacturers contribution to have been paid early in the life of the deal, assuming you have all the paperwork you can request an amortisation schedule
