Miles from a set of tyres?

Our Rocco is now 3.5 years old and needing a new set of front tyres (which I am rather glad of as the current fronts have been shocking - I let our tyre fitter talk me in to trying something I wouldn't otherwise have).

We have done 47,000 mixed miles (I give it the beans occasionally and my wife does a mix of motorway pootling and gentle town driving) and will soon be on to our fourth set of front tyres, with the original rears still going strong. VW previously mentioned slightly uneven tyre wear on the rear, but it looks fine to an untrained eye, and there seems to be reasonable tread depth still.

Is anyone else getting really good mileage out of the rears and plodding on with the originals? We are looking to change the car in 6 months, so trying to get another 6 months out of the original rears is tempting at this stage (saving £300).

Mine is coming up to 5 years old and 56K miles and still on the original rears. They are suffering from the stepping problem and so far I have lived with the noise but I think I will change them soon. The fronts are the second set and are due for replacement.

Peter.

Personally I like tyres to age at the same rate so swap front to back at 10,000 miles. That way they pretty much need changing all at once and you don't have tyres hanging on for an excessive amount of time.

I get about 13,000 miles out of the fronts and I'm still on the original rears at 37,000.
Currently on Pirelli P Zero’s on the front.

Original Pirellis on the rear - just creeping up to 43k.

Fronts were changed for Hankooks before I bought the car but I've added 10k since and they must have already done around 10k.

Probably will need to change the rears in approx 5k though

Thanks all - seems our tyre wear is fairly standard. Will see if I can eek a few more months out of the rears before it gets changed.

Your tyre swapping sounds sensible Mark, but a bit late for us on this set.

I'm impressed with your tyre wear PAJ - we've gone through 3 sets of fronts in 48,000 now. Maybe I should ease off a little. :)

I am still on all original tyres, 19,500 miles. Fronts now down to about 4mm so they are doing well.

I thought my fronts were fine at over 20,000 miles then parked with the wheel turned one day and saw the center of the tyre was bald!

Replaced em and car gripped so well again!

So the fronts probably started to get iffy at 15k
