Scirocco Central

Afternoon all,

I'm due to change my Scirocco in around 6 months and in the years since buying my current car I've changed my job. I now work from home 9 days out of 10 so do very few miles.

Setting aside the options to keep the car or buy another second hand, would I be out of pocket much either way in buying (new) diesel over petrol or vice versa? I think I would be doing only around 5k miles a year (one of the advantages of not using the car in the week often) and would consider keeping is longish term.

Hello, if you doing so few miles the petrol maybe a better option, the diesel is more expensive to buy from new unless it's company car. Also you won't get the fuel economy benefits you get with the diesel on so few miles. A further point to think about is the DPF regen the diesel requires. If it was my money on such few miles I'd go petrol IMO.

As above, with.such a low mileage the petrol makes more sense.

Thanks for this, it's what I thought but it's great to have some consensus. On the purchase price, I've been using the ipad vw configuration app, and the base cost of a 2.0 Tdi DSG is £27,190, whereas the base cost of a 2.0 Tsi DSG is £28,169. So it seems like £diesel < £petrol is not as clear cut now with various power outputs and gear boxes available? (I've never given it much thought before, I had always heard that it was more expensive to buy a new diesel car)

But I think for me it's certainly going to be petrol, which I'm inordinately excited about as I've not had petrol since Mk5 GTi was stolen!

<edit>I hadn't properly thought through the power options, 140,177,210 etc. Still makes it even trickier to compare</edit>

I've just (yesterday!) changed my 210 petrol dsg for a demo 177 dsg diesel. The petrol scirocco was brilliant with no problems, excellent performance and economy (35 mpg regularly), the drive home after the deal was 172 miles and it averaged 56mpg and went like a rocket! I love both the petrol and diesel cars and you won't be disappointed whatever you buy, they are great. One further thing, it isn't just about mileage for the petrol vs diesel discussion, it's about how you feel about the power delivery, although it's different between the 2, some prefer one to the other regardless of how many miles you do per year.
