Winter wheels for a scirocco R

Given the state of the roads at the moment and the difficulty in seeing pot holes in the rain, I'm considering getting some wheels just for winter. I have std 19" wheels currently, so I'm looking at 17 or 18.

Would 17 " wheels fit over the brakes? Esp the front, I assume something like 225 45 17 tyre size?
Does anyone have experience of the quality of the r look alike wheels, are they really like cheese?
Could anyone recommend a good budget wheel brand if going new?
Or does anyone have a set of 18 wheels for sale? Don't mind minor kerbing as long as wheel are buckle free, I'm in West Sussex.
Thanks

I'd recommend original R winter wheels (according to ETKA) - St. Moritz. They are 17x6.5, ET39.
Been using them without any issues.

Go for 18". The 17" are approved by VW, but the front brake housing is VERY close to the rim. When occasionally driving in snow it can lodge itself there and if then freezes it will definitely touch the rims.... The potholes in the road gives another problem, but that has something to do with the clearing of the frontspoiler :-)
