Hi guys,

Noticed on a post that it was suggested someone had the Cambelt & water pump changed on their 40k service.
As I'm still looking for a rocco I'd like to hear your opinion on should I look for one with a little more miles that should if had it done already or keep looking at lower miles cars that will need it( 59 plate kind of age)
In all honesty I was surprised to hear that the older cars are advised to have it after on 4 years, I expected about 60k like older cars.

not really all that relevant but i just got the dealer to replace it as i bought it at around 42k and it hadn't been done, so i got it thrown in for nothing , could try that

The car I looked at Sunday was a family owned dealer rather than Vw etc. If I'd of heard about it I would if checked if it had it as it had full history to 43k & was showing 45k on the clocks

Cambelt on Pre May 09 cars is 4 Years or 120k. On May 09 > cars its 5 years or 120k.

So would you not touch one that's not been done if it turns out to be a pre may car? Price dependant maybe, otherwise I'd be a bit annoyed if I bought one then had to throw £500 straight at it

VW quote Sep 2009 on their website as the changeover but I believe it will be fron May build dates as Aaron says, just VW playing it safe .

It wouldn't bother me if it's not been done but I would factor in a discount to cover getting it done plus a little bit more for the hassle.

Yeah use that as a bargaining point, be it private or dealer!

A good VW specialist should be able to do it for £350..

£500? Ask your dealer about fixed price servicing for cars over 3yrs old, cambelt changes are IIRC on the menu.

I was just going off a thread I saw on here, had prices at £419 for the Cambelt & £499 for the water pump too. Sure that is what it said.

Fixed price depends on if 4yr service is done at the same time and if petrol or diesels, IIRC petrol's are £70 cheaper than diesels but a diesel belt done with the 4yr service is discounted by £70.

So £419 inc water pump (petrol without service or diesel with 4yr service) or £499 or price matched to any indy using VW parts within 5 miles. Try Seat or Skoda dealers if no indy's within range. I believe that a price rise is imminent on the fixed price menu.

The problem you'll face on used examples is knowing if the cambelt only has been done or if the previous owner had the cambelt and water pump changed. Anything that is around the four year cross over point probably won't have been done TBH unless it's being retailed by a franchised VW dealer.

Had this dilemma when i bought my Roc. Awkwardly from a fiat dealer for a good proce 00 2.0 tdi had 50k on the clock with no cambelt done on the history. Dealed with the fiat that ill take it serviced only as per vw stabdard which needed a new cambelt they said they will look into it. At that time i popped into the vw dealer and asked them they said this car is due a cambelt. Check the german vw service thing they recommend over 100k irrespective of age. On picking up my roc the fiat told me they looked into the cambelt and that it looks like new and doesnt need replacement. Ofcourse i told them to put it in writing and obviouslt told them if ot goes they will replace the engine under the 1 year full warranty tey also gave me.

So there you go. However and having the long loge service on the car which i hate i intend to change the cambelt the water pump and put it back to normal servoce intervals pn my next mot/service.

I just see it as something that I don't want to do,buy a car then Chuck hundreds into just to cover my ass. For me it needs to be reflected in the price. Must say though I haven't seen one advertised that mentions it in the add.
Haven't had a response all weekend from the seller of the car which surprised me, I asked for their best offer now including the fact it needs or shortly needs this work doing
