Scirocco Central

There is a thread on Pistonheads at the moment about age appropriate cars. At 41 I've been feeling too old for my Roc for a while now. Feels like I should change it for something a bit more grown up.

There is lots of talk on here about lowering, coil overs and LED's which all seems to me to be a young persons game.

I cringe when I see another Scirocco slammed to the ground or with Forge or whatever stereo stickers on its windows.

I have been waiting for the R version of a new Cayman but maybe I should just go for an S now. I think a Porsche Cayman is more age appropriate for a 41 year old guy. There are no insurance special 120bhp Caymans. I don't like that the low power Rocs look the same as mine.

you have a point. but i cant help but laugh at what your saying when you have got a 12inch sub and 1000 watt amp. isnt that a young persons game. never seen or heard of a 41 year old driving round with a sub

F@ck em mate. I'm 44 and still whizz around like a teenager. You're as old as you feel or at least, the person you're feeling ;-)

I recently turned 40 and feel the exact opposite to you mate, feel like I won't be changing mine for a long while yet. Still makes me smile every time I get into it.

As for the modding that's happening everywhere, I think it doesn't matter what car you have, the natural thing about them getting a few years old and, hence, more affordable for the younger guys means a natural tendency for them to make theirs "unique"!

I think you'll find that the whole stereo upgrading industry started while we were all teenagers, just couldn't afford them at the time! Hehehe

I completely agree with the OP and sympathise totally - even worse for me at 49 now!

I am also a 40 something, but I don't feel too old for my Roc!

Same here. I don't feel too old. In fact I'd be happy to get another one when Mk4 comes out.

I'm 46 & still like a 30yr old, enjoy the Roc it's a fantastic car !

I also ride a 1000cc sports bike after passing my test 4 yrs ago, may be I should act my age, ha ha not a chance

Bike test at 42 is a mid life crisis. Only kidding:-)

I sold my GSXR1000K7 last year and have yet to replace it. Prior to that I had a 1000K4 and a 1000K1

The sub is very discreetly installed in the spare wheel well, it's not like I have a big carpeted box with perspex, neons and a 1 farad capacitor in the boot or anything. I like to think of it as the connoisseurs choice. I like my music and the Dynaudio in a Roc with no sub seemed a bit ordinary. Other cars with premium audio usually have a sub. My previous car was a BMW 330Ci with Harman Kardon which had a sub so I think of mine as just beefing up the Dynaudio to where it should be (to where it is in a Passat where Dynaudio includes a sub).

I used to have a Kawasaki Ninja 900 and then a Fireblade but changed the Blade for a Vespa GTS 250 which also feels like a grown up choice. The Vespa is faster around central London where I live and I've grown to quite like the style of the Vespa. Had my bike licence since I was 20.

I still feel young (I kitesurf most weekends which might be a problem in a Cayman, I will have to have a test drive to see if the gear fits) but I don't feel like a teenager any more.

I still like my car, It still feels new to me since I've only done 13000 miles in it in three years, maybe I'm just looking for a reason to justify a Porsche?

You don't see 30, 40 or 50 something people driving around in Corsa's the same as you don't see teenagers getting about in Honda Jazz's. I just feel ever so slightly too old for a Scirocco now. In my head (with the Saturday night Vodka & Tonics) I think a Scirocco is a 20 something or a 30 something years olds car.

Cringe all you want. If I want to do anything to my car, I'll do it and at whatever age I feel like. I'm only early 30's and love the car I'm in even though they are getting cheaper 2nd hand and I'm seeing more younger people as opposed to the company car gang in them.

Most of the cars people move onto when they want power etc anyway have them done, only factory. S-Line's, top models/variants (Audi 'RS', Mercedes - AMG etc) are lowered and tuned, so it's just a different way.

I actually crave to see modded cars, especially if they wouldn't stand out in the first place. I am so bloody sick of WHITE, GREY AND BLACK cars. It's not that I don't think the cars look horrible in those colours, it's just that it seems EVERYONE likes their car to be that colour. Aside from a few blue and red, it's so hard to see something stand out. It's getting more and more dreary. Many people will say "but it looks nice in white" or "I like black". Problem for me is, that 1 person is like almost everyone I know. There's some different colours out there. Just wish more people would take the jump I guess. It is just nice to see someone mod there cars and take a personal touch, on "bags" (which I personally think if a wheel goes in any arch, it's horrible) or even the craze of "stickerbombing". Which again I don't like. It's just nice that someone care about their thing.

Well, I'm over 60 and I love my 2.0 TSI DSG and could well get another one when the time is right. When I was 40 I had a Fiat Uno, 50 a Golf GTI MK 2! I do like heated seats though!

Having seen my car, my neighbour, of similar age to me and who has a Series 1 as a family car, went out and bought a Z4. It's a lovely car, and six pot driving is so much more refined than 4 pot. However, a principal reason for my buying a Scirocco was for its understated styling, as compared to a boxster or TT, which I would have felt uncomfortable with at my age...53. So it's all horses for courses and states of mind.

And to turn around your argument/thoughts, I'm an owner of one of those lower power Rocs since I have no need for the extra - even though I do fancy it

I work at VW and we get a large mix of age groups buying the Scirocco, and you'd even be suprised at the average of the likes of the Golf R etc..

Howevers, yours looks like a goods example, and im in the market for one, so if you do decide to sell, let me know!

I agree - I'm also over 60 and retired - often being out and about when others are at work - sorry!- there are a lot of other 'older' sciroccoists - out there on the road. The children have flown - we don't need the Passat anymore to cart heavy loads to the football pitch or university and heavy duty DIY or IKEA lugging is becoming more infrequent- we could have bought a Golf- but everyone has one of those- we fancy something more stylish, but being older we are more cautious and hedge our bets - we still value practicality - rear seats needed occasionally (has anyone tried the rear-seats in a BMW 1 series coupe) - to pick up visiting offspring with large case from airport or train station, and space enough to carry the odd bulky item although a bit of ingenuity is sometimes required.
I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the car which has been flawless so far - it's superb to drive on cross-country roads as well as an excellent long-distance cruiser on motorways- feels fast and very safe at all times. I've not had more fun since my old RS2000 in the early eighties. Would I have the same spec again? I think I regret not going for the 170 diesel as the chassis is obviously capable of dealing with more power - but at the time I potentially needed to be able to insure the car for a younger driver. The Dynaudio sound upgrade is very good but probably only noticeable when the volume is turned up to a level beyond my tolerance - I would need to spend some time in a standard car to notice. Leather seats - an option when I ordered mine - I don't miss - especially in summer- the quality of the VW ones is not a patch on the BMW equivalents and were very expensive at the time with very little return when you came to sell the car- plus the cloth ones look stylish and have worn very well. The DSG is a delight especially in urban motoring- it seems so well matched to the diesel engine and is very rarely caught out - I would definitely go for that again. The parking sensors are an absolute must - would be nice to have them on the front as well. The dipping passenger wing mirror when reversing is also essential - but I think this may be standard - I have the folding variety. My one regret - it won't fit in my garage - but how many cars do these days- and anyway our nearly 30 year old restored 2CV would fare far worse if left outside in all weathers.

You're never too old for anything*, and believing you are is the beginning of the end.

This is me really, my main regret is that at 60 and a bit I have got rid of my 2cv! I I've had a few and fancy a classic rally with my son, I feel another one coming on now, many thanks for that!

I wouldn't mind betting the average age of an R driver is quite high (sort of 50+) given that insurance premiums would be high on this kind of vehicle. I may get shouted at by some 20 somethings saying I am wrong, but I wouldn't be at all surprised.

I tend to keep my cars quite a while, despite being in my 40's I am only on car number 7, which is quite low I would have thought.
