Did I get a decent deal?

Post by Michael28Scirocco »

Hey, first post to the scirocco central forums although I've been scrolling through the message boards for a couple of weeks since purchasing my new car. I paid £13k for a candy white 2.0 TSi GT DSG with extras like panoramic sunroof, winter pack, folding wing mirrors etc. It's only a 58 plate but had just 19k miles when I bought it and from what I can tell is in fantastic condition, bodywork included. Do you think I just took advantage of a poor car sellers market or there's a potential catch? Also, once my 6 month dealer warranty runs out I was thinking of looking into an extended warranty with the likes of warranty direct. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello Michael,

That price sounds about right for an immaculate 58 plate, was that from a main dealer?

Just for comparison, I was offered £12k for my 09 plate 6 months ago when it only had 16k on the clock by a main dealer.

I would think you have got a very good car there and 19k miles is ridiculously low for a 58.

As for warranty, with such low mileage I would like to think that mechanically it should be sound, unless of course it has done lots of very short journeys. My only fear would be the DSG, but if the car has been well looked after and serviced on schedule, I would perhaps be inclined not to take out extended warranty.

Having monitored prices quite closely over the past 6 weeks when researching a purchase of my own, I would say that the price for a 58 plate with the goodies as described would be in the ballpark if from a franchised (VW) dealer. Possibly you might have got them down a little but, hey, we always wonder about that after the event.

Having a similar budget, I was torn between an earlier plate 2.0 tsi and a later 1.4 160 dsg, but went for the latter. I paid 13 and a quarter for a 2011 plate with mf steering wheel, 18 inch interlagos wheels and revering sensors: 22K miles, franchised dealer, excellent throughout apart from some road rash on the bonnet.

Must admit, am now fancying a 2.0 tsi, so will be looking to upgrade next year, when the 2012 Nav models should just about come into range (with a spot of very heavy bargaining).

From what I've seen, the dealers seem to be struggling in shifting them, which is curious given the rise in new car sales. My advice for anybody looking to buy from a franchise right now would be to hold out for no more than 90% of the banner price.

Hi Michael,

If you do go ahead with the extended warranty I would seriously look at the VW one.
I have a 58 plate 2.0TSI & have just purchased another years warranty for £275 & that includes full breakdown cover. This is for their driveline cover, which covers all engine & gearbox plus other items.

I looked at places like Warranty Direct & they were coming in around £400, which didn't include breakdown cover.

Thank you for the great replies, I forgot to mention it has a full VW service history as well. I think once my 6 month warranty runs out I'll definitely have a look into the VW warranty that you mentioned. This is an excellent forum, has been really helpful especially considering there's not too much information on the internet regarding the scirocco.

glad to know Michael28Scirocco got some decent replies about his 58 plate Scirocco. How about commenting about my deal now :)

Last month I purchased a 61 plate Scirocco 2.0 TDI GT DSG Bluemotion Deep Black ride with Pedal shift gears for £17k from a private owner. Mileage at 34k. Immaculate condition, interior and exterior. I am the 4th owner in 2 years. Showroom price was £29k. Well looked after, no accidents and equipped with a full service history.

Panoramic sunroof, rain sensors, Vienna Truffle leather seats, winter pack, bluetooth, multifunctional steering, parking sensors, xenon headlights, traction control and more.

I am not a UK resident. Locally, the price tag for a similar car in Malta stands at £38k!

Feedback is welcome

Hello - well that sounds a pretty good deal, my only concern is why so many owners in 2 years? If you are the 4th owner, on average the previous owner has sold it on after only 6 months.

34k miles is also quite high for 2 years old but this is reflected in the price.

All sounds ok, (assume full VW service history), but my only worry is the number of previous owners.

Sounds good to me. I would also wonder why so many previous owners. Regarding the millage. Its a blue motion so people who have bought it in the past bought it for the economy aswel as the looks. SO wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks guys for the replies, I am still new to this forum.

Previous owners were all women. Seller says first owner was a women in her late 50s and it was unsuitable to her. Cannot reckon the reason why the second owner got rid of it but I can message her whenever I wish because I have her Facebook details and the last owner wanted to upgrade to a BMW M Series.

I bet this car did not suit the profiles of its previous owners. Engine runs smooth, bodywork is immaculate, bottom of the car is still astonishingly intact. That is to say, I can identify nothing wrong with the car.
