Scirocco Central

I bought a second hand Scirocco from a dealer a couple of weeks ago. It's a black 58 plate 2.0 TSI DSG with panoramic sunroof and 40k on the clock, a little bit disheveled but I've been doing everything I can to bring it back to it's former glory: Got the dealer to recondition all the alloys and a tiny dent in one of the wings as part of the bargain, Chipexed the bonnet myself (really happy with the result), bought new wheel badges, started my own detailing collection of bottles and waxes and even bought new buttons for the keyfob.

I've been totally amazed by the car. I love the power, the handling, all the gizmos, and above all I'm especially impressed with the DSG box. In normal pootling around mode it really looks after the fuel, but put it in sport and it flies, always ready to go without any delay. I can't believe I haven't considered an auto before.

So imagine my dismay on Wednesday morning when I was driving to work and noticed that the engine management light had come on. The car was driving perfectly and other than the light, there was no sign that anything was wrong. I got to work and got the log book out and saw that the lambda sensor was showing an emissions problem. I rang the dealer and booked it in to be check over. The earliest they could do it to give me a courtesy car is this coming Wednesday, so really I won't know what's wrong with it until then.

The good news is that the light went out yesterday evening when I was driving home. I'm wondering whether it was something that I've done that's caused this. Namely, I ran the tank right down until it said it had 20-25 miles left, then filled it up with a high RON fuel. Now I know that in itself is not a problem, but the next journey I did was to literally crawl home round the M25 for 20 miles. I wondering whether a combination of the detergents in the new fuel (first time I'd filled it with high RON and don't know whether the previous (female) owner ever had) and a very slow journey had caused the Lambda to think something was wrong.

What does anyone think - I'm in two minds whether to bother taking the car in as the light has gone out and there is literally no outward sign that there's anything wrong with the engine: It cold starts fine and pulls like a train. Despite scaring me with the light, I still love it!!!

It's worth getting it scanned to see if a fault code has been stored in memory.

2 most common causes of EML is faulty coilpack or the inlet manifold. If it was a coilpack you would feel a misfire or stutter so my guess is it's the bery common inlet manifold issue which manifests itself at around your age/mileage. If you do a search you will see it has been discussed a few times.

Thanks bob. I think you're right. I'll get it checked and if anything is wrong it's under warranty.

Not sure you will want to know, if you read further down the threads ive also had a problem like this within the last month. My roc now has a brand new engine..!

Thankfully the 2.0 TSI doesn't suffer from the same problems as the 1.4 TSI, so extremely unlikely to be the same issue.

It's the manifold. They couldn't get hold of the part straight away so hopefully will be doing it tomorrow or Friday.

Not too bad then and at least you'll get it done under warranty. I believe the offending part has been updated so shouldn't happen again

Yeah, pretty good outcome really. New manifold for free and nothing seemed to be wrong with the car other than the light coming on for a day. Just gutted I'm without the roc for a few days and am driving round in a Polo with "drive this car for £146 a month" written in massive letters on the side!!!
