RNS-510 questions

My RNS-510 has started freezing at startup, the model part is 1T0 035 680 C:
Using the hidden menu have found that it still has stock firmware 2720
But also the hard drive 'tempstatus' is showing 'Degraded' is this of concern?
If I upgrade the firmware what is the most current stable release for my model? And also if I do upgrade will I need to recode the unit (I don't have vcds)
So far when it freezes at start I press <> * and the soft reset fixes it until the next time, will a firmware upgrade fix this or is it down to the hard drive degraded status?
Thanks for any help

I would be inclined to focus on the HDD degraded message. Imagine your home computer trying to boot up with a degraded HDD and you will know what I mean

Thanks for reply.
Turns out fair few people have that message without any problems:
http://vwnavi.com/volkswagen-factory-fi ... raded.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Definitely not right though, as still locks up loads

eird. I have a major problem with mine, sat nav doesnt seem to know where it is, always shows about 50 metres from where I actually am, means I miss a lot of turnings!!! I moved the antenna up as high as I could behind the dash (and its fixed to the dash firmly) but has made absolutely no difference!

I had issues recently with my unit continually rebooting and when it did stay on it wouldn't detect the MDI ect.
It ended up being the motherboard, I contacted the following company and they confirmed the fault,
http://www.hazzydayz.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; cost was £360, bit steep but a hell of a lot better than the cost of a new unit, yours could possibly be the hard drive which I think can be replaced. Drop the company an email and they should be able to help you out, they are located in St.Albans so hopefully local enough for you.

£360 !!!! In that case I would just bin it and buy another one from ebay for about £400...

I did think of that but don't trust the ones on ebay, lots of copy/stolen units about.

I'd be inclined to pull the hard disk and clone it onto a similar model. New hard disk probably not much more than £40 plus time to take it out etc. It's only a laptop hard disk at the end of the day.
Modern hard disks are able to report various statistics about their condition - temperature being one of them - if a hard disk gets too hot this can cause it to lock up.

You just have to use common sense with ebay sellers - get one in the UK for a start - make sure it has the original radio code card etc....
