RDS510 DAB Standard or Option? Upgrading?

Post by andyb2004 »

I've tried to search for the answer but found nothing definitive, so does anyone know...

Was DAB an option that had to be specified on the RDS510, or was it just luck if you got it?
Is it now standard and when did it become standard? My car was registered March 12 and I was suprised (disapointed) it didn't have DAB.
Has anyone swapped the unit for a DAB version and managed to use the existing aerial, or is this idea a non-starter?

Thanks in advance for any wise words.

The RNS 510 did not have a DAB option until recently - not sure when the change over occurred but believe it was late 2012. You have two options to upgrade. You can buy an extra DAB 'box' with additional plug in cables that allows continued use of steering wheel buttons. Search the net for this upgrade. It is one that VW suggest if you talk to them but can be purchased elsewhere at about £180 + fitting although a relatively easy DIY job. The alternative is to buy the RNS with DAB and retrofit. You can use the existing antenna in the right hand rear window but will need a new DAB amplifier to replace the FM one under the rear window and additional wiring. The first route is the easiest if you don't mind a window stick-on DAB antenna. I went the second route but it requires removal of the rear side trim and additional wiring so takes a bit more time. I have posted on here how to upgrade with part numbers for the RCD 510. The same method applies with the RNS. There is a thread for removal of the rear trim on here somewhere that is very good.

Thanks for the detailed reply.
I realise now I made a typo - mines a RCD 510 - I assume the same applies though?

Ok, Thanks. I think I'll have to load up the SD card and listen to a few podcasts for now. I didn't think I used DAB that much... until now when I don't have it anymore :(
