I have a cylinder fault on one of my cylinders, 1.4 160 engine. Car is 59 plate so now out of warrenty however only done 5k miles from last service (From vw). what do you guys think? someone has told me to contact vw direct since the car only has 25k mile total and its stupid. what do you reckon best? also been told that this was a known fault on this model (low cylinder pressure) and that they shud fix for free if its this however not sure where I can find official info on faults and recalls?

If you do a search on the site you will see other threads ob this topic and the fact it is a common problem. Firstly contact your local dealer and if you have no joy speak to VW.Customer Services.

Its currently in with my local dealer now however its already £80 just so they cud plug the laptop in and tell me what i already knew! I know they will end up with a decent size bill so just wondered where i stood

When the dealer gives the final diagnosis and.the quote to fix then that's the time speak to them about it being a known problem and.your expectation of it being fixed by VW as goodwill
If they don't agree, escalate with VW Customer Services.

I don't want to alarm you but if it is the common known problem it's either an engine rebuild or a new engine.

I will do that when they get back to me since i think its shocking for this price of car with only 25k miles.

In brief what is the common problem? Jst so i know what to expect.

Just.type 1.4 TSI twincharger problems into google and you will see. There are 2 main issues, one being exvessive oul consumption and the other being low compression on one or more cylinders.

Well after a vw tech saying the computer said i had a problem with my cylinder, my local dealer has now told me the problem is with a turbo cut off value?? £160 to fix. I dont know anything about engines but personally i dont see this fixing the problem? Surely this wouldnt make the car shake unlike a faulty cylinder would explain??

I think that's the diverter valve, which used to be a common failure on Golfs. The symptom normally is that the turbo won't spool and the car might go into limp mode and have no power.

If they say that's the problem and you pay them to fix it amd it turns out not to fix it then you will have some comeback. Just make sure the receipt outlines your symptoms accurately which you asked them to diagnose and fix.

So after being told the value would sort everything, i turned up, payed and drove for about 5mins before my warning lights went wild and had no power, got back to the garage and they will now fix the problem. Not totally sure why they ignored it in the first place but now rebuilding my engine. Great! Just what i want from this price of car.

Just had a similar experience with my 1.4 160HP. Compression loss on cylinder3. Complete new engine from VW altough warranty had just expired. Car is 4 years with 55K on the clock. I was also very dissapointed to say the least that a Volkswagen has a piston failure after 55k kilometers but as said above it seems to be a common issue.
I am glad that VW payed for most of the costs because a new engine alone already amounts to something like 5000 euro

Just to sum up. New engine is needed. Vw is covering most costs. I just have to pay some of the labour costs.

hi guys i just registered today and was interested to see that i am not alone in experiencing engine failure .my car is 4 years old i bought it 1 year ago .and has just under 20k on the clock full service history .and has just had major service when the extended warranty ran out 2 moths ago .vw supplied a new engine and paid 25% of labour the dealer 25% and i paid the remaining 50% amounting to £1470.me thinks i have been done compared to my fellow contributors
