Timing belt gone!

Hi,
I'm kinda new to this forum I drive a 2l Gt TSI 210bhp scirocco, the timing belt has gone on the vehicle at 40000 miles. A bit of history my car was registered in March 2010, it went in for a major service a few days ago, the EML light appeared on the dash the same day the car was taken in for a service, I did not want them to look at the EML as they charged to much the car was fine to drive there was nothing obviously wrong with the car. Later that same day when the vehicle was dropped back to my address after the service was completed the driver said my car was losing power and was cutting out and shaking. A mechanic had since looked at it and said that the timing belt has gone. He also said that there may be damage to the valves.
Can anyone help me out and advice me on the following

- I know the car is out of warranty would vw pay for repairs?
- should the company have carried out a service with a fault, secondly the damage was caused whilst the vehicle was in their custody
- the paperwork which I was given from the service company indicates an interim service was done, the manage has apologised and said they have the correct paperwork indicating a full service.

I would like any advice people can give me on here, I just don't want to pay for the lot as I don't think I have caused the damage.

The 2.0 TSI doesn't have a timing belt, it's a chain.

The chain could have jumped a cog which would make it run rough. If a belt fails the engine won't start and is basically scrap.

I think you need a new mechanic

This is a well known problem with the 2.0 tsi engine. Volkswagen has a technical bulletin for this. If you have been a loyal customer to Volkswagen, try to ask them for goodwill. To be honest, in most cases when the tensioner fails, you will probably need a new engine. Search my posts and on other forums to see how scared I am of this. This comes without a pre warning.

Since your engine is still running but bad, you might have made it, but the repair costs are still very big

Sounds like a tensioner issue causing failure, VW know about problem and replaced engines

I would try VW for goodwill, but it may only cover parts and not labour - which will still be expensive. Maybe getting the car hooked up to VAGCOM would confirm that the EML already on when you put it in for service was completely unrelated to the timing chain tension - if that is the case then you may be able to argue that the issue occurred under the custody of the service centre. Proving that they caused it rather than it being remarkably bad timing to happen to them rather than you will be difficult.

Personally I would not have accepted my car back from them in that state....

Hi guys!,

Thanks for the replies.
the Roc is in a Vw garage at the moment.
They carried out a diagnostics using a machine they said that they couldnt find anything.
They then did a compression test for the fuel whatever that is, they said that they had to strip the engine.
They should know by the end of tomorrow what the fault is, i am obviously losing sleep over this now.
Does anyone know what it would be?..

VW will/would replace the engine or recommend this if your paying.

However was the service centre you used an authorised VW agent / main dealer, if you have full VWSH then push hard for goodwill. The ECU logs will suggest when the chain slipped a cog. If you explicitly asked the agent to not investigate the EML fault then no they wouldn't have investigated any rough running during service or refused to service the vehicle due to rough running.
