Hi guys. Just wondering what's the difference between the 140 and the 170 tdi engines apart from the obvious bhp and map. Are the intercoolers different etc?

I understand the main difference is the turbo, injectors and map. i'm pretty sure they both use the same intercooler set up

Cheers bob. Seems strange vw using a bigger turbo tho as the mk4 golf tdi turbo is the same from 110 to 150?

you will also find that the 140 is a dohc and the 170 is a sohc. different valve lay out completely.

They are both dohc, 16V units.
The cams in the 170 are different to those in the 140 though

Don't forget the 140 has BM and the 170 does not.

I think it is a DOHC Lee, just took these from the Wikipedia page for VW engines, and it appears to be a DOHC.
170 PS 1,968 inline 4
(R4) 16v
DOHC 125
(170) 4,200 350
(258) 1,750-
2,500 63.5
(86.4)

Dont want to make any enemies so sorry if i came across that way. I had the cam cover off on mine today though and there is only one cam cog that the belt is on then the fuel pump up front of it. I do however find it a little strange myself but my reg check app and other sources also say its a sohc? Can any one else shed any light on this? Its definatly a gt spec and the v5, vin num, engine num say its a 170.

The document at the link shows the layout of the cams on page 9

The link shows a BKD 103 kw (140) Pump duese engine (pre 2008) which was in my previous A3. The Roccos and all vw range 2009> are Common rail tdi's. If you take your cam covers off or just have a look behind you will see what i mean, although im not fully convinced that its a sohc.

My mistake, it is for the PD engine. I'm reading on my phone.
Just because there is only one cog driven by the cam belt does not mean its SOHC. The second camshaft can be gear driven from the other.
There is surprisingly little information online about the engines, you will just have to believe me. They are both DOHC, 16V engines.

Sorry you are right paralla, i appologise for me seeming awkward with this but i have now learned that they are DOHC 16v units. The second cam is ran via cog gearing from the 1st as you quite rightly mentioned. My mind is at rest now, im also sorry for kinda hijacking the thread. Thanks for the knowledge guys.
