Collect Now or Wait!!??

Hi all,

I ordered an R-Line in June and was told it would arrive mid-Sept. It appears that it is now at the dealers so not sure how much value I will potentially lose out when I trade it in if I collect it now (I'm very impatient!!), as opposed to waiting for Sept 1st and having it as a 63 plate? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Paul

I would wait.
Collect now and it will feel great.
In 4 weeks you will feel like it has aged a considerable amount

The dealer will want you to pick it up this month to help with figures, so see if the dealer will throw in a freebie if you pick it up now.

To be honest, in the grand scheme of things whether it has a 13 plate or 63 plate has little impact on trade in value. It really is just vanity.

I would wait. They told you it would be mid September so it would be 63. Now they are going back on their word.

Hardly going back on their word or being deceptive - it's just arrived quicker. Most people would see it as a good thing!

I'd get it now, but I am impatient :)

It is a good thing . but not when you factor that it will be a 13 plate and in a few weeks it will be a 63 plate. And appear to be 6 months old allready even though its brand new.

Only to shallow people, what does it matter what other people think?

Why not have a nice cosy chat with the dealer. Like Bob says, they will want to help their sales figures for August registrations as that should earn them some £££ from head office / VW.

Gently point out that three weeks difference in collection makes six months difference in number plate and therefore the potential resale value. Shrug off the salesman's dismissive reply to this suggestion.

Indicate that if you went to DVLA Online and bought a "cheapish" plate, to make the reg date anonymous, that would cost at least £250. Perhaps a nice shiny iPod to go inside the armrest, full of your favourite music, might be a good idea (£150 for a 160Gb Classic at Argos ! )

Ask salesman if his manager would like to "oil the gears on your decision-making process". Sit back in silence and let the salesman fill that silence with his words until he says something that you like the sound of.

Above all, if you are not going to collect now unless they give you a sweetener, be prepared to sit tight and collect on 1st September or they will forever have you over a barrel.

Whatever the decision, at least your car is here and ready for collection. Better that than being told of delay after delay !

Good luck.

D

Excellent advice in the above post. The notion that 13 or 63 plates won't affect value will come unstuck when you are negotiating a trade-in in three years time, believe me...

Yup - I also endorse the above posts, on trade in that would make a significant difference, even though the date of registration only differs by about 3 weeks. I remember a dealer telling me some years back (which is a load of bull) that people's mindset is such that they still think of the change of plate as another year older, like the old days with the letters! :eyepop:

Thanks all for your replies. I spoke to the dealer but they appeared to be in no rush as they didn't offer me any incentives to take the car now. To be honest I was glad they didn't as it meant I had no decision to make and I'll pick it up on Sept 1st. Nearly 4 long weeks away!!!

Don't think VW dealers get paid on registration of cars - but ealier in the process which would explain why they are not bothered about hanging on to it until September. I had the same experience on my last Golf which arrived late January and they held it until March for the 11 plate without any quibble.

I'm Australian but have lived in the UK for the past 10 years and it still baffles me that the plate makes a difference. I understand why it does. Different states in Aus have different registration plates and none of them give any indication of the age of the car.

People don’t ask what plate is it? They ask what year is it?

I also don't get bathrooms without showers, immersion heaters, decorating (painting), nearside & offside (drivers side & passenger side), undertaking and hundreds of other strange UK things. I could go on........

For the record I have a 2010 model year Roc on an 09 plate and if it was cheaper to buy because of the plate then I'm all for it.

I had a similar issue when I had mine. In the end, I had to admit defeat and collected it on 20 February and then the new reg came out 9 days later. It was all to do with the VAT going up from 15% at that time and VW stumping up the circa £600 difference.

I had a ding dong with the dealer but they weren't budging, even though they verbally told me a month before they would hang on until 01 March before registering it.

True - but there is a big age difference between a car registered on 1st January and 31st December in any one year - nearly a year!

The UK plate system reveals which part of the year (from three segments) a car of any particular year was first registered. My car being a 2012 car on a 61 plate, falls within the period 1st January to 28th February. As a conseuquence having as late a numerical identifier as possible within any given year is more desirable.
