RNS315 - large media on USB

Having had a Dension MP3 player with 100gb HD in my previous car, I'm looking at using something like a USB SSD or big-ass USB stick to get a similar capacity with the RNS315.
The manual mentions some folder and file count limits for SD cards and a 32G partition but doesn't mention anything about any limits on drives connected via USB.
Has anyone tried something like this?
Any known issues or suggestions for file layouts for quick browsing?
On the Dension I used a structure of first letter->artist->album so you never had to scroll through more than 20-30 items to get anywhere.

Also has anyone tried standard 2.5"HDDs via USB?
I may try testing the limits of VW's tech support by asking them what's the maximum current the USB port can supply :)

Car is Nov 2012 so should have pretty recent firmware

The forum search is often handy http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... hard+drive" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks - originally searched by RNS315 as I expected issues to be head-unit specific.

What USB interface do you use (or is it a drive with internal USB?)
I just tried a 150G Samsung ATA drive in an Ebay special USB enclosure
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400392619536? ... 1497.l2649" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It spins up and gives a brief flash of the activity light & that's all - doesn't recognise any media.
Tried freshly formatting it (BTW I had to use this utility http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index. ... format.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; to format FAT32 as >32GB) with no joy.
The only thing I've had working so far is a Sandisk 32G USB stick.

Tried a few more permutations.
Hitachi 40G drive, works with 2 different USB adaptors, so looks like the adaptor isn't the issue
Samsung 150G and Toshiba 16G drives - neither work.
Have tried formatting the Samsung with various cluster sizes with no difference.

Does anyone have any specific models of drive 150G+ that are known to work on the RNS315?

I bought a Touro 500gb USB3 drive, which seems to work OK - copied about 80gb in 2000 folders so far.

It's quite a snug fit in the console - you have to put it connector-down due to the slight taper of the console - I'll probably re-case it in something a bit more shockproof but can't really complain for £43 shipped !

No significant startup delay either.
