Parking sensors / radio display

Test drove a 2.0tsi with a rcd510 head unit fitted at the weekend, while reversing it back into the dealership I was expecting the radio unit to display a parking screen, but all I got were the bleeps, is this normal or should there be a option selected to allow the radio display to change.
Thanks

that will be a retrofitted kit. its only the factory fit option (or very expensive/labour intensive retrofit) that gives the view on screen

Thanks, it's a sept 10 car, the price list booklet only says audible, just looking at other forums a lot of people seem to mentioning the display on the screen as well as the beeps, it's defiantly factory fit parking sensors as I checked the options codes.

Not sure what price list you are looking at so can't comment on why that only says audible.
The text from the current price list "Driver’s assistance: Parking sensors, rear – ultrasonic, audible with audio volume reduction when activated and optical parking display via vehicle’s audio system"
If the sensors are factory fitted then yes the optical display is standard, this has always been the case.
That car's sensors were retrofitted, if the seller says they was fitted from new they was retrofitted at the dealership once it had arrived with a cheaper retrofit kit. The wiring complexities to get the optical display with a retrofit are not cost effective for the dealer (& likely beyond their brain power), iirc only 1 place has done the optical display with parking sensors as a retrofit & even that was with alot of cajoling from the cars owner & basically accidental.

Does anyone know what option code for the ff sensors should be on the build sticker ? I took a photo but it hasn't come out very well

Got to say I agree with trix. You only get the visual display with the beeps on factory fit parking sensors.
Is not unknown for a customer to specify parking sensors when ordering but then for the dealer to cock it up. So when the car eventually arrives the customer agrees to having dealer fitted parking sensors (without the visual display) rather than waiting another 16 weeks for another factory order.

Humm I'm ringing the dealer today, I left a deposit on the car I'm really not happy about this, I've decoded the options list and the parking sensors don't seem to be listed (I'd still like the option code if anyone knows it just to be sure)
My wife was concerned about the visibility for parking and after looking at a couple other cars was happy with the visual display.

It seems it doesn't show up on the build sticker

Yeah the dealer rang back today after I sent him off to contact the original owner, they were fitted prior to delivery at the dealers, pahh I'm really annoyed about this, I mentioned it during the test drive when the display didn't change and was given something about the the option needed to be turned on the radio.
I'm so tempted to ask for my deposit back - going to sleep on it though, thanks for your help.

If you're happy with everything else in the deal, it seems a bit harsh cancelling it over that.
Is it really that important? It's still got parking sensors which should stop you bumping into things.
I've got retrofits on mine & they're absolutely fine.
To be honest, if I'm backing in somewhere, I'd naturally want to be looking behind me anyway (for what it's worth in a Roc!) rather than looking forwards peeping at the radio screen.

I've recently changed over to a TT and just have the audible sensors. I thought that would be a big step backwards but really it makes very little practical difference. Although the visual display is quite impressive, from a parking point of view it adds very little.

I don't have parking sensors fitted, but even if I did, I think I would still be looking for myself rather than relying on the sensors. I guess it is what you get used to.

Just wing mirrors and sensors for me in the Roc. Did the trick every time. You need a quick look over your shoulder first of course.

The only image worth looking at on the radio screen would be a camera picture from a rear view camera (only factory available from late last year). I normally look at the rear view mirrors and listen to the beeps when reversing.

Before I bought my 'roc, I was worried about the restricted view in the back... Had it 10 months now, and I've always thought the view was fine! I can see all I need to, plus as Zephy and Mark V said: The rear view mirrors are brilliant to use. I use the parking sensor beeps more as a guide really, I find them OTT most times.
The A pillar positioning is more of a view restrictor! Especially on a roundabout

The display on the screen is a nice to have but I wouldn't say it was a deal breaker. Possibly you could use it to negotiate some money off or a freeblie. In reality, it's the beeps that guide you rather than the 4 lines on the screen.

If it's a VW dealer get them to throw in something else as a sweetener to compensate for the lack of optical parking sensor information.
Stainless steel pedals, sill plates, mud flaps, mats. Something like that shouldn't cost them much and will make you happier.
I have factory parking sensors and I look at the screen rather than the mirrors but my previous car only had the beeps, I like the screen better but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

The biggest thing about the optical display is that it really impresses your passengers. From a parking point of view it rarely offers any real advantage.
Don't worry about it too much. If everything else if OK then go for the deal.
