Questions to ask

I was looking on autotrader today at Scirocco R's for sale. There is one on there at an independant dealers but it doesn't add up. First of all it seems quite cheap (18,995) given the spec. Most importantly though I checked the reg plate that is on the car and it comes back as a black VW transporter!! Strange huh?

 It's a show plate with the dealers company name's initials... GMC!

The clue is the rear plate being white instead of yellow, and the advert states the car is a 10 plate whereas the plate on the car is 11.

It smells fishy!

I was told by the VW dealer here to beware of cheap ones yet it's under warranty.
Could've had a smash/repair at that I'd say.

It's not that cheap, it's still within the range of normal pricing for independent dealers.
I've seen quite a few 2010/2011 R's for between £19k-21k.
Yes, vw dealers will be more, but for an indie £19k is ok.
I'd start worrying if I saw one for under £18k.

Thanks Sincs. It's definitely the best priced one I've seen with that spec. I didn't realise the big price difference between independent and main dealers. The indie certainly seems reputable and has some pretty nice cars in stock.

Ok, I reckon this could be the car for me. I haven't had much experience in buying cars. If I call the dealer what questions should I ask about the car?

He won't have had time to know the car so general checks of any existing HPI clear, FSH, 2 keys and log book.
Ask can he have a tech go over it to save time if returning. What's his own warranty - 3 months?

It may not have a spacesaver but compresser and repair gum kit instead. I think they are now switching back to adding the spacesaver again since the trend is for 19" alloys on these. No panic and nothing to bother about unless it has none! If none then wonder if the kit was used on a tyre. Tyres may need changing anyway so check tread depth. Legal is 1.6mm over 6" width. The front inners wear more so that's the concern to watch for.

It's probably due its 3yr Full Service (about £480) - be sure VW dealers don't fit the Standard Pollen Filter (tell them to use charcoal in advance). Plus ask for the DSG updates for revs around corners if it is DSG - perhaps your seller could do this.

Re key FOB, unlock the doors when loading the tailgate (separate unlock button but also inside by driver) to prevent accidentally locking your keys in the boot whilst loading!
Good luck!

Would definitely recommend spending a few quid on HPI if you're keen on this particular car, definitely worth the £20 quid if you're saving a few grand on the book price by purchasing through an independent.

Spotted this car myself over the weekend. It does seem like a good car at a decent price

It's not disconcertingly cheaper than similar specs, maybe worth checking if it's one of those Dutch imports (usually given away by missing engine number on the V5, and/or non-English manuals, foreign PDI stamp in the service book or missing data sticker in the service book).

Also HPI - even though dealer says it's clear, always worth doing your own check.

The dealer should have already checked HPI to cover himself whilst he has it. Just ask to see the proof.

I've decided not to enquire about the car in question. I have in fact agreed a deal in principle on a 1 year old R instead. If everything works out I'm hoping to get it done at the weekend so will post the details then. Cant wait, I'm like a kid at Christmas!!!!!!

Prepare yourself to feel special on the road. I'm still loving the looks it gets and the randoms that pull up next to me and ask "what car is that mate?"

Picked up the R today. A 640 mile round trip. It's AWESOME and it goes like stink!! Glad I went for the DSG, I love that boom sound (best I can explain it) when changing gear. I love everything about it. It'll need a good clean after the weekend then I'll add some images to the showroom

Awesome mate!

I had to wait a week to pick mine up too. It was the longest week of my life. It's worth it though, the car is incredible. Enjoy
