Scirocco PLEASE HELP! Shakes when apply brakes:(

Post by B1_DUBZ »

Hi, have a 2.0 tsi scirocco, for some time its developed a shake when I apply the brakes. I have changed bolts on underside anti roll bar and changed the antiroll bar drop links, but its the same.
Its now gotten worse and when I brake over 50ish it shakes and doesn't sound or feel to healthy...
Any suggestions as I think brake discs? But look fairly decent condition as no lip on the edge..

Help would be appreciated:) thanks guys

Has your car been out on a track day? Warped discs are hard to achieve on normal hghway driving. Either way the dealership won't pay out for cooked and warped brake discs.

Check if the bolt that its used to center the brake disk is not broken.

That small screw is just for alignment of the holes in the disc to the hub for the wheel bolts and takes very little load. It's actually the wheel bolts that hold the disc onto the hub and take almost all the load.

Check wheel bolts and discs for warping.

Yeah I know that. But once, my old golf shaked too when I apllied the brakes and the cause was that little screw that was broken and the disk was not properly centered. As soon as I replaced the screw with a new one, it was all good. Maybe it has nothing to do with it but it solved the problem :P

On a couple of cars I've owned I've not bothered with the screw as I've had to drill the head off due to it being seized. Never had any issue with disc alignment other than the bolt holes as it's a good fit on the hub.

The screw is just an alignment aid nothing more, the disc is hubcentric and the wheel bolts hold it all together. At a guess I'd say the it was the fact you had to undo and redo the wheel bolts which cured the judder, the screw a red herring!

Best bit of advice I was given is to clean the hubcentric seat with a wire brush and use a little copper grease there before putting the disc back on, makes it a lot easier next time you have to take them off and makes sure the disc is seated properly.

Drilled discs can start cracking around the holes, grooves are noisey but both can help run a cooler disc, but I'd say go bigger diameter. Does anyone know if you can simpley 'bolt on' a setup from the R or if there is a brake carrier which enables a bigger disc with standard calipers eg G60 carrier on a Lupo GTi?

Big thumbs up for Mintex pads too (1144's) :-D
