Scirocco Central

Hi, this is my first post but I really need your help. I ordered a high specification Scirocco from my local dealer which they received a few days ago, and I was planning to take delivery tomorrow. They have just contacted me to say that it has arrived with options I had not specified, specifically tyre pressure sensors which is a very small extra cost which I can live with, but more importantly it also has xenon headlights which wasn't even an option when we 'built' the car on the computer. The are now suggesting I pay an additional cost of £800.00 to cover the cost of this unwanted extra. This is almost certainly negotiable but can anybody tell me why xenons are no longer an option. Was there a problem with them or something?

Also do they need regular replacement like ordinary bulbs and if so how much do they cost.

I've got about 3 hours before I meet the dealer so any feedback would be much appreciated.

DJW this has happened before and the guy paid a gesture of goodwill sum for the xenons on his (never said how much), they are rare and worth having but start negotiating

When did you order the car? If Xenons weren't an option when you spec'd the car then I'm slightly suspicious about them tell you it's been built with them! As far as I've understood it, quite a few of the early cars with Xenons were coming back with fault, and because of some problem with manufacturing VW couldn't even replce those, let alone fit them to new cars!

Anywho, it's their mistake and not yours. You shouldn't have to pay for anything you didn't specify, whether fitted or not.

It is not a factory build. It was a car that was available within the dealers group.
However I do have the VIN number which shows it was built in 2009.

Ah, in which case I would offer a token extra amount but seeing as you're not that bothered don't get sucked into paying the full whack. The Xenons are desireable, but if you're not specifically looking for a car with them fitted be prepared to walk away and see how the dealer reacts!

I would start by offering them £200 and go no higher than £400 for the lot.

Thanks for all your comments. If you think they are worth having then perhaps £200 is a reasonable amount.

Mind you the car is already registered, taxed and insured in my name so perhaps I can dig my heels in!

(The dealer was desperate to include it in his March sales to meet his target)

If that's the case I'd dig my heels in too! It's their cockup, not yours. If they have to re-register the car it will fall in value anyway so they may as well just throw them in to shift it.

Just to let you know I ended up paying £400 towards the cost of the xenons.

The dealer also gave me a Lifeshine treatment + kit (worth £130.00)

Should be bit of a rarity I suppose, as I doubt many cars have them fitted.

Fair enough, £270 isn't a bad price for having genuine Xenons fitted

good deal, but i think you should have held out, you would have got them free.

After my initial concern I am now happy because they were not available as an option when I placed the order. If they were I would have probably bought them anyway.

It's a fair point, i'm just keen to know what will happen when someones break... will parts be readily available or will there be numerous VOR's as manufacturers struggle to obtain replacement parts. After all there must be some greater forces at play that leads a major manufacturer to withdraw a seemingly popular and profitable option of a model in the range.

I've heard some horror stories of units failing and VW having to replace both sides with the standad non-Xenon headlights because they couldn't get spares! Nothing reported on here though so hopefully that was just a very small number of early cars.
