I remember seeing someones post were they had the d/s window smashed and the stereo stolen. Are there any security panels on the stereo to take with you when you leave the car or another way to stop those with sticky fingers helping themselves. Its a pretty desirable stereo for drivers of the older VW's

If You move the stereo to another car, You must dial in a four digit code to make it work. The thief can not see that though...

No there are no little panels to take out and take with you.

At the end of the day you can't really stop someone bricking the window at 2am and taking what they want. Just have to hope it's sufficiently difficult to do quickly.

That's quite worrying! I didn't realise that the factory fit radio was so easy to remove. At least with my BMW, the satnav was built into the actual dash.
If anyone has any security advice, would be most welcome...

A few of my neighbours cars were broken into this weekend in the early hours and various things stolen, sat navs, stereos etc

My car was safe thank god but not what I want to hear considering its only a week old

Got in by just smashing the glass and helping themselves but still no one heard them.

I've recently fitted a hands free kit and saw just how easy the rcd510 is to remove and that was me being carefull not to scratch or damage anything.

Has anyone come up with a more secure means of protection as VW obviously don't care that the don't have a removable front. I had thought about changing the 4 torx bolts to something else like a smaller version of the locking wheel nuts but the more i think about it the S H I T S that break into cars would probably do more damage to the dash if they come up against these security bolts. They may just leg it when they're torx screwdriver doesn't fit but its the big flathead that does the damge when they try to lever it out!

any ideas?? at the minute my best one is covering the dash stereo area with a towel so you can't see what your breaking in for. I'm thinking they may take a chance based on what might be fitted to this type of car but also that it may have been removed/ replaced and its not worth the bother.

It's far from really easy to remove. It takes at least 10 minutes to remove an RNS510 from a Golf/Scirocco when you know how to do it. I imagine it would take longer when you have to do it in the dark and you're a pikey.

Have you tried removing one yourself? I could easily take it out in 1 minute if i didn't care about damaging the trim and used an electric screw driver with a torx bit, cut the loom and its out!

they could strip your interior in 10 mins!

you wouldnt need to take the torx bits out, you can buy kits to remove the sterio (theres 4 small slots) then unclip the wires is prob just as quick as cutting, breaking in and taking it out would take about 30 seconds

If someone knows what they are doing then they could take the stereo or even the car in a matter of minutes. Like you say, they could end up doing more damage if you change the fittings so it's not really worth worrying about. The car has a cat 1 alarm and you pay for insurance, there's not much else you can do. Even if you have a system you can take the face off the car may still be broken into on the off chance that the face is under the seat or in the glove box. Just make sure you park it in safe places and get a security light for your driveway. If it's easier to break into someone elses car then the thieves will do that. My sisters corsa had the stereo nicked whilst it was stood on the driveway a little while back, whist the mini, impreza and passat cc were left untouched (all had way better sytems).

yeah im not going to post exactly how to steal the sterio lol, but if someone wants it there gonna take it, simple as that, but most people dont really go for breaking into your car, they usually go for taking your keys instead!!!!!

I know it's an old topic but I to worry about having the rns510 nicked too. A great idea would be security glass or a film that can be f ixed to the side windows. I'm sure there's companies out there that supply that sort of thing.

Change your screws that hold the unit in to a security type. May stop them if they don't have time to get it out.

The harder you make it for the thief to remove, the higher the likelyhood there will be expensive collateral damage.

Yes - I remember back in the day (the late 80's), my Dad and I fixed the stereo into my car so securely that when some twat tried to nick it (rife then), they made a right mess of the dashboard. Stereo was saved but dashboard was somewhat wrecked!

Best security for the RNS is that it looks exactly the same as the standard RCD to the untrained eye!
