Possible Over Fueling

Apologies for repeating details posted elsewhere in a specific 170 thread but I thought this might be more of a generic issue.

I am getting lower than expected MPG (clocked an average 41mpg over a 26 mile trip on mixed A & B roads) so I had a word with my local VW specialist (not a main dealer) and he said it might be over fueling. I am thinking of getting him to run a diagnostic check and then depending on the result go back to the garage I bought it from last week as they said I should get much better economy than my GTI and the weather is now a bit warmer than last week. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on over fueling. Also how would I know if the DPF was playing up as I have heard that can cause a drop in MPG - the DPF light is not on and I didn't think to ask when I spoke to the garage earlier.

Thanks

Couple of questions:

1. How vigourous was your driving? I could easily get 41mpg if I get the foot down.
2. How was traffic? Stop/start and statuionary periods do quickly eat away at your average mpg.
3. How old is the car? The engine get better fuel economy as it breaks in.

It was mixed speeds between 30 - 60 but no real foot down as it was back roads so mostly steady with no real traffic other than getting stuck behind a slow driver doing 40 for half of the journey!

The car is just over 2 years old with 24k on the clock.

On the drive from London to Norwich when we picked it up we averaged 44 and other than a bit of traffic out of London it was a steady motorway run most of the way home with maybe 10 minutes of sitting in traffic. Weather was cold and people have said that can effect it - first diesel car so hadn't realised but it wasnt that cold on the above trip!
