MDI AND Aux input not working!

As per the title guys. I have an RCD510 with dynaudio.

Media in and aux worked fine when I bought the car. I now only ever use the sd card.

However just tried using a USB flash drive with mps it's not working.

I have tried every possible combination of iPod, and USB cables and 3.5mm cables and numerous drives. Nothing is working. It feels like the aux and MDI in the armrest isn't connected to head unit!!!!. I've reset the headunit, tried 4 different iPods, 9 USB drives formatted in various configs etc and NOTHING!
Doesn't even charge phone or iPod etc. no led on the flash drive either.

This is really annoying me for a 30k car without the ability to play a single mp3 via iPod or flash drive.

Suggestions?

Cheers

Had anything apart in the centre console area since it last worked OK?

There are no specific fuses.

Connection is simple - device into media, same out from the Media to the RCD510.
So either a connection or the Media Controller has failed.
Have VCDS? Controller 2E registering OK? No fault codes?
Media can be partially tested using Link to 2E 1KHz tone tests. If this is working, the fault lies between the Media 2E Controller and the Arm Rest Connection.

Hi RW1,

Thanks for the quick reply, it's much appreciated.

Nope, nothing has been touched, everything all factory. Only thing is the car had a DSG software update for the gearbox as it was a little erratic but thats it. I can't see that affecting it?

I don't have a VCDS ;( I have cleaned all the contacts on each cable and device with contact cleaner to no avail. The last time the head unit was seeing the flash drive (few days ago) it just showed up a line of squares like this: [][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]

Wish I could afford a laptoo and a VCDS i'd be out there right now! Where is the media controller located (or is it the RCD510 itself)?

The media unit is the plastic insert unit in the Arm Rest which the device (USB stick) flylead plugs into. The part along side the deep pocket contains Controller 2E. Removal is with radio type keys as per the photos...... Media Unit 2E removal

With it out you can check the bottom connection to the RCD510 is still plugged in.

Thanks RW1,

Do VW sell the genuine keys for the removal? I can see the slots. Or do you have the part number?

Ironically, I had thought about removing the unit anyway as I have had a tapping noise from this area since I bought it. Sounds like a cable tapping against the plastic in the bottom of the arm rest at the front just below the 3.5mm aux in connector?

I'm guessing the plug has come loose hence the tapping noise AND the loss of MDI?

The VW tool if they will order is T10057. Because you have the tool number it should be straight forward but you will get 4 radio release keys! About £8 - £10??? Hence the home made in the photos. Halford sell a pair of Radio Keys in the electrical section for £5.99.

Yes the bottom plug connection inside the lower part of the arm rest/insert can cause the abrut loss of audio and tap away on the central console plastics. It is a connector which should be locked into the socket.

Update:

I told VW the MDI wasn't working and they replaced the RCD510 (even though it works perfectly - idiots), then when I next spoke to them they said the technician has found another fault with the MDI and we have replaced that!

In short, you were right, the MDI did need replacing, shame VW didn't listen to me I could have had my car back a day earlier!

However, I now have the latest version of the RCD510 and its much better than the old unit, faster and smoother operating, clearer display and better colour co-ordination on selected items.

I would love to see the version list of head units.

Either way, thought i'd update this post with the outcome, I know many people don't come back and contribute.
