satnav map freezing

I'm baffled by this, as are my local dealers. Has anyone encountered this problem or got any suggestions? The satnav [RNS 510} works perfectly if you enter a destination, but the map display fails to move as you progress on the journey. The system clearly knows where it is at all times, because in addition to the instructions for route guidance being faultless, the on-screen display of the current speed limit is always right even though the map on which it is superimposed remains frozen at wherever you last switched on the ignition. Logically you'd have to assume the fault is in the RNS unit &/or its software - but the software has been checked online by VW in Germany, and the RNS unit itself has been replaced more than once [my 'R' is still within its 3 year warranty, but not for much longer]. Typically, the problem seems to have been cured after the unit has been replaced, but after a few weeks the problem recurs in exactly the same form: everything works perfectly except for the map being frozen wherever the ignition was last switched on. My local dealers have tried everything they can think of, and it's hard to see where the fault could be if it's not in the unit itself or its software. Any ideas?

Normal reason for the freeze is the software load is incomplete but as you've indicated, the unit/software has been changed, in effect removing them as the cause.
That leaves something wrong with the CAN Gateway 19 Controller or the wiring from it. Due to the unit's disturbance/exchange making it work for a while. It would be a step forward to check the rear connector's pins/wire security and whether there is a wire break in the loom wiring in the visible dash loom end length. Theory being the pin/wire connection gets remade by the techician disturbing, then at a later random point, the CAN-bus connection high or low wire looses connection and isolates the RNS510 from the CAN-Gateway Controller 19. So it freezes in the manner described.

The wires to focus on are orange/violet onto RNS510 pin 9 and Orange/Brown onto pin 10 at the back of the RNS510.
If it was the CAN Gateway Controller 19 itself, I would expect the fault to return immediately.

Thanks a lot for this. I'll pass it on to the dealer when I take the car in and let you know.

Hi, for reasons I won't bore you with there's been rather a gap between the information you provided and the car going in to the dealers: But yesterday it did. Firstly, many thanks again for the insight into possible causes of the 'satnav map freezing' problem which you supplied. The chief mechanic was apparently a bit doubtful as, apparently, the cause you suggested should flag up an 'error' report, which was absent. Nevertheless, they have replaced the wiring / gate you suggested just to be sure. They also reported when I collected the car today that the technical boffins at VW headquarters have now acknowledged that this fault has been reported in a number of cases (previously,it seems, it was unknown to them) and have now issued a software fix which is supposed to prevent it recurring. I saw the evidence for this acknowledgement, and the software update has also been completed. Currently, all is well, but only time will tell. Thanks again. Chapel

Good, like a perfect ending.
