Hi All,

I'm currently looking at a couple of Sciroccos and am wondering about when the 'big' services are and what jobs if any should be done at or around 40k miles.
My google-fu is lacking I'm afraid....

It will depend on the Scirocco's engine you are looking at...... 3rd & 4th year services are the more expensive irrespective of the engine.

Common:
- Oil & oil filter each service.
- Brake Fluid at 3 years then every 2 years.
- MoT.
- Pollen Filter at 4 years and every subsequent 2nd year.
- 6 speed DSG Gearbox oil at every 40,000 miles. (No service on 7 speed)

Diesel:
- Fuel Filter at 4 years.
- Cam belt and tensioner at 4 years (VW service tables state longer but in the press they've just admitted it was 4 years being raised to 5 years for post August 2009 registered VW's).

Petrol:-
- Air Filter at 40K miles if it is an 'R'. (Otherwise its six years)
- Cam belt at 4 years for 'R' only.
- 1.4TSi and 'R' Spark plugs at 4 years or 40K miles
- 2.0TSi Spark plugs at 6 years or 60K miles

There are a few servicing topics on here to give you an idea of 3rd Year costs, here's a couple.....
3rd Year Service Cost (1)
3rd Year Service Cost (2)

Search will bring up more ;)

Budget for £400-ish for each year of 3rd and 4th and it will be a good measure overall.

Thats very interesting... there was a lot of debate on UKMKIV's about that with it being pointed out that VW Germany (the people who designed and made the car) stipulated only a distance regime to the cam belt change and that VW UK (in effect a franchised importer) simply created the time limitation to provide work for service centres!

Any pointers to the press reports you refer to please?

VW Driver - January 2013, p58. It is VW(UK) referenced. Due to improved belt manufacture.

VW Germany Scirocco Service Tables still at:

Upto end of 2009 TDi - 180,000Km/110,000 miles. No time limit.
2010 onwards TDi - 210,000Km/130,000 miles. No time limit.

(All TDi - 120,000Km/75,000 miles if dust levels are high such as: South Africa, Greece, Hong Kong, China, Israel, Turkey, Singapore, Thailand, Dubai, Kuwait, UAE, Lebanon.... )

2.0ltr 'R' - 180,000Km/110,000 miles. No time limit.

Other engines: All 1.4TSi & 2.0ltr 200PS/210PS are chain driven.

I always found it strange that the dealers recommended cam belt changes at 4 years when the service books said otherwise.

VW (UK) time limit is "now recommending", as VW(UK) have always stated, not compulsory service change. So its your choice to follow their advice as it has always been. What you have to do is check out with any warranty policy you may have such as the VW Extended Warranty.

I think VW Extended Extended (UK) will insist on the UK recommendation from my conversations on other similar matters with them because there is a risk just like any other insurance policy, which VW Extended Warranty underlyingly is. (They've already told me, 3rd party agent annual servicing/repairs isn't accepted, only VW dealership records and VW parts to keep the warranty valid. Such cases may be a new battery which is not covered even in the comprehensive policy version, answer given... dealer must fit a VW replacement battery at the owners cost (An eye watering ~£140 battery plus 1hr at £85 - £100. :fall: )

Prior to 2009 is still 4 years recommendation to change the cambelt.

Presumably it is based on UK stats from costly repairs relating to a snapped cambelt and partial contribution of good will costs. Certainly in Parts, the number of times a belt seems to snap at 6 to 8 years is fairly common on pre 2009 engines. So I don't think they are trying to fleece the customer, more prevent an even bigger out of pocket cost.

With the new MQB platform which the Scirocco 4 will be one, VW are hinting at cambelt life for the lifetime of the vehicle. Hmmmm, had one of those types on my Mk2 Scirocco battery in 1994. Between 1997 and 2009 I had 5 free batteries out of the Lifetime Guarantee. As they say, "go figure...."

My 6 month old 2.0Tsi Dsg says it needs a service in 6 months time? I thought it was very 20k or 2 years. Vw uk says it is on long-life servicing

Longlife is variable depending how the car is driven. Its not 20k miles/2 years fixed. Two years is the limit, not what it will trigger at.

With it being 6/6months its may be coincidence but could have been set to 12 months/10K miles not Longlife.

Check which box the PDI technician ticked in the Booklet 1.1 Service Schedule - Time & Distance or Longlife?

It can be changed in the diagnostics.

So for the R after 2009 the cambelt is now 5yrs instead of 4 right? Or is no time limit?
