Dsg Clunk

Hi,
Had my car since new (March 2012 and its done 5300 miles) I'm sure the sound i am hearing has been present for a while but am curious if it is normal or not.
Its a DSG R, car is in Park I go from park to D or R to D and then is a small clunk from under the car but it sounds more of a clicky - clunk

with the windows down.
Was in a multistorey car park today with windows down with cars rear against a wall so the sound was quite loud which may be the echo from the wall but it made me question if it is normal or not?
One thing to add aswell, it doesnt do it every time...if it clunks and i then change from D - P - D Or D-R-D its fine, it only seems to do it if left in park for a while.
Thanks
Daz

I get this , Not had it for a while now though, I;ve explained this to VW they say we cant do anything unless they hear it themselfs. Unhelpful!

Sure its not the DSG parking lock when its mechanism that locks the differential or is unlocking?

Ha, You've lost me there
All I can tell you is it seems to happen if I leave it in Park for more than about 30 seconds then move it in to drive in one swoop without stopping at R or N.
Or if i'm in reverse for a while then straight into D

OK another way... There is a locking finger that operates when in "P" on DSG 6 spd. The locking finger uses a dedicated gear wheel to lock the transmission in "P". Hence "P" for Park. You are hearing either the retraction action or engagement action of the locking finger into the Parking Gear inside the Differntial housing.
To confirm, get some one to listen with the bonnet up, ion the area at the middle lower back of the engine bay on the engine/gearbox split line. It should be loudest where the two front driveshafts enter the gearbox.

Thanks for the explanation, I opened the door earlier and hung my head out the door to listen underneath and it is at the back of the engine from what I can hear.
So its normal?

Had the R from new? Ever parked on a steepish hill using the "P" brake first instead of the Handbrake and let the "P" lock up the transmission? Then, afterwards on driving away, the DSG has been hard to get out of "P" with a bit of gearbox noise on its disengagement?
Or it may be a compenent change recently compared to earlier 6 spd DSG as this seems to be arising in the last 12 months.

Don't recall ever using P without the handbrake first. It just seems odd that it only happens every now and again. It doesnt happen everytime i put it in drive. It seems to happen after being in P for atleast 20-30 seconds before it will do it again.

As said, only recently heard of this occurring and rare. So to answer is it "normal"
The only thing I can see is the locking finger (pawl) on the Parking Gear may be sticking due to a weak release spring coupled with the oil creating a "in locked" position suction. So instead of the locking finger immediately following the operating lever inside the differential when releasing the Parking Gear, there is a slight delay due to the oil film between the Parking Gear and the locking finger holding the locking finger in place. And a possibly weak spring unable pull the locking finger free. When it releases, it then jumps and hits the internal operating lever for the parking lock (the noise you hear). It should really follow silently like a flat cam.
The reason for 30 seconds-ish is that it may take the locking finger that long to sink into the oil film in one of the Parking Gear slots and create a better temporary holding sealing of the locking finger to the Parking Gear.
If it is this sort of situation, I'd expect the effect to less pronounced or not at all as the gearbox oil gets hotter.
Is it problem if this? .... no, as the locking finger can be moved by the Parking Gear if its delayed as the operating lever is already out of the way.
May not be unique to the R as above,
Link.
Bottom line, gearbox would have to be replaced to rectify at the moment as 6 speed DSG (unlike the 7 spd) are a return item as whole and not to be worked upon in the dealership. "
Currently, no repairs can be made to gears and shafts"

It's normal...
It's the locking pin disengaging. To make it less noticeable when you park put the car in neutral, pull up the handbrake then put the DSG into P.
