Just a couple of queries really, I jumped in the car to see the coolant warning light flashing at me yesterday, upon checking the coolant manually it was way below the usual level and hence the reason the sensor had picked this up, first question, any reason why there would be a serious loss of coolant over a 3-4 week period becuase I checked the coolant manually when I did the oil last month, it was fine. Obviously I checked there is no leak.

I simply added some water because I was in the middle of nowhere and coincidentally it was in for a service today. I asked the garage to add in the correct VW approved coolant but they told me the water would be fine, apparently VW coolant is fine down to -40, so some water (I would say it has 50/50 coolant/water now) and, once flushed through the system is fine - I want a second opinion that this would be OK?

My other query is that whilst I regularly pay attention to getting the oil to 90-92 before absolutely caning it, I have never really noticed how hot it can get, what are peoples experiences on reaching high oil temps after spanking their R?

With regards to the coolant loss, I would get the system pressure tested for leaks. I had a similar issue with my R32 after 3 years of never having to top up the coolant it started dropping. Turned out I had a porous block and a pinhole had developedm. Cue a new engine from VW.

If you've just topped up with a small amount of water it will be ok. I always topped up with a 50:50 kix of distilled water and G12++.

On oil temperature, the highest I've seen mine on my diesel is 106 degrees.

Cheers Cupra, I have smashed my R but cannot remember going too much over 100, so 106 is a nice beasting!

Can I ask was your new engine under warranty?

Will get the coolant resevoir checked for any leak, however small - cheers.

Yed, the new engine was under warranty. It was a bit of a shock but VW were aware of a potential issue with a batch of blockd and had warned dealers to be on the lookout.

Unlikely to be your cause but get the system pressure tests as there are a lot places for leaks to develop.

Not seen anything over 96 despite some enthusiasm, but then again I've not tried it on a hot day because we've not had any since I've can the car.

Went on for 6 months or so until I could see it was a leak.
