Does anyone know what the piece of plastic in the middle of the dash near the windscreen is for?
Just curious

I'm pretty sure it's a gps antenna or traffic system antenna could be wrong though.

Yes - quite likely to be the light sensor, definitely not a gps sensor, that is a 'fin' shaped antenna at the rear of the roof.

I believe the light sensor is on the bottom of the rear view mirror sucker. You can see it from outside the car.

Is it not part of the 'soundaktor' system? I've been thinking of getting rid of the thing to quieten down some cabin noise.

As far as I know it is a sun sensor. Used by the aircon controller.

That's my understanding too. It detects sunlight and allows the aircon to compensate for the additional temp caused by sunlight through glass.

Under the black cap, there are two sun sensors (photodiodes) G107 & G134. Their function is to control the temperature flap and the air blower speed in the Climatronic/Climatic. Its so that when the sun shines on the driver and passenger, the cabin temperature is compensated so they don’t feel they are getting warmer due to the direct sunlight coming in through the windows.
The black cap acts as a light filter and also protects the sensors against UV light.
If either fails, they will generate fault codes in the 08 HVAC Controller:
00797 - Sunlight Photo Sensor (G107) , Open or Short to Plus – Intermittent
00709 - Sunlight Photosensor 2 (G134), Open or Short to Plus – Intermittent
Upon failure, the Climatronic/Climatic assumes a fixed value to continue operation without sunlight compensation.
