Hi All,

Ive got Lugano alloys on my Rocco, and its in todays for its first service (10k miles). Ive had a call from the garage that the front offside tyre is 3mm and they are advising to change it. They have suggested a khumo, but id rather stick with the OE Pirelli PZeros. Should the tyres only last around 10k miles. Where speed limits permit I am quite a spirited driver, however I ensure I never spin the wheels when setting off, mainly due to the £200 price tag of the pirelli's.

Has anyone got any experiences with these tyres, and has anyone found any alternatives that last longer? I would rather spend the money on quality tyres, I dont want budget.

They have a great selection and the prices are pretty goot too, especially for the OEM P Zeros (K1).

I also have 19" Luganos and running P Zeros but my fronts are on 29k miles and are just down to between 4mm and 5mm. When it comes to replacing them I'll either stick with the Pirellis or go for Goodyears F1 Assy 2 which I had on my R32 and were brilliant.

You pays your money and you takes your choice :-)

10k is ridiculous, I've got Bridgestone Potenzas on my 2.0TSi and I get around 20k on the fronts, double that on the rears and I'm not a slow driver. I notice that you've got a TDi which is a bit heavier at the front but 10k is atrocious, if I had to replace mine every 10k I'd be buying new fronts twice a year. I suggest you check the wear pattern to see if yours is uneven, there may be a tracking issue.

When I put my Rocco in for it's first service at 10k miles, the dealer recorded the fronts as being 7mm. He then asked me if ~I had put a new set on the car as he said it was quite normal for the diesels to eat front tyres due to the torque.

I do just under 30k a year so couldn't live with 10k out of a set and it was a worry for me when I seen my car came with P Zeros.

I had a previous car that came with P Zero Rossos and they were shot after 10k, but I was more youthful and did less motorway miles.

If my tyres lasted only 10k I'd have to buy 2 sets of fronts a year - that's 4 tyres at £200-ish a pop which is £800; that means it would cost me £2.19 per day just for tyres! Bet VW don't publicise that in the advertising paperwork.

My Pirelli P7s that came with the car are almost shot at 12k miles on the fronts - another 2k to take them to legal minimum. I'm used to getting 20k miles from the fronts.

My last Roc had Dunlops on them. Can't really comment about wear on those as I had multiple sidewall bulges on those tyres from very minor pothole impacts in winter.

The inner 2 bands are down to almost the markers, but lots (5mm) left on the outside. Normally indicative of overinflation but my tyres have always been inflated to VW's guidelines on the filler flap. The rear tyres are wearing evenly and slowly

How many other people seemingly have "overinflation" type tyre wear on their Pirelli shod Rocs, more specifically TDI Rocs (if that makes a difference)?

I doubt i'll be getting Pirellis again, perhaps Michelins from Costco, or Bridgestones (lasted a long time on my Golf TDI170, but wet traction was a bit poor)

The Pirelli's that came on GT TDI 140 only lasted me 8k miles, was just the 2 inner bands that were at the limit. Back 2 tyres have loads left.

Just had Goodyear F1 assy 2's put on and I can tell the difference so much more, loads more grip.

Robbo: Well if a few more confirm the same story as you and me it would appear that the Pirellis aren't up to the task of accepting the front load of a TDI or VW have quoted the incorrect front tyre pressures on the filler flap sticker.

My dealership were having none of it when thie tyre wear was highlighted during my first service, they told me it was over inflation. I asked whether they had checked my tyres and found them to be overfilled. They confirmed that tyre pressures had been checked and they were as per the filler cap recommendations. I might have a look at my local dealership at the weekend and see if the used forecourt has other Pirelli shod Rocs with the same tyre wear pattern on the fronts.

Mine wore evenly but were done for at 12k miles. They were the original Bridgestone's.

my pzero's wore unevenly, lasted for 15k, i think i would have got them again if it wasnt for the wear.

As i said my front P Zeros are at 4mm after 29k miles and they have worn relatively evenly, certainly less than 1mm differential across the width.

I run 35 psi all round and the majority of the time I'm in the car alone.

I've never got close to this mileage on front tyres on any car I've previously owned.

The service report states the wear is quite even: 4mm/3mm/3mm - Gonna leave them on for abit longer, so maybe i'll see around 12k.

Im glad that im not the only one - the rears are still at 7mm, so it looks like i'll get around 3 sets on the front to 1 set on the back - crazy!!

Another vote for Goodyear Assyemtric 2. Great in dry, wet and on track. Lots of feel and grip.

The rears should basically last forever expect 50k out them with relative ease and 3mm tread seems a bit soon to be considering replacement 3mm is twice the legal minimum and only 50% worn. A new tyre has 6.4mm of usable tread before reaching the legal minimum, (8mm total tread).

I'm looking at getting tyres for my lugano 19" wheels. I'm not keen on the current ones being so low profile they are 235/35 at the moment I am wondering if 235/50s will work and how they might look? Any thoughts on this?

If you change the sidewall height significantly, like your considering, your speedo and your odometer will not read accurately. If you want to increase the profile you need to reduce the wheel diameter to maintain the rolling circumference.

good point. so disregarding tyre wear, my current diameter is 482.6+(235*.35)=564.85mm

if I go for 18" wheels 457.2mm. Rearranging x=(564.85-457.2)/235 = .46

so to maintain rolling circumference with 235/45 I will need R18s

If going for 18" I would stick to the OEM Tyre Size, which is 235/40x18
