TDI 140BMT That weak????

Hi chaps.

Continuing to narrow down the options on my soon to be acquired vehicle (second hand but no more than 2 years old).

Thanks to previous post I have to (reluctantly) eliminate the 2.0TSI from my enquiries on a fuel economy basis.

Now then, I currently drive (wait for it) a Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130PS. Honest, it's not that bad and has served me well for the past 68,000 miles. Call it mid life crisis if you like but my son doesn't need a car seat, the wife has something if we need 'practical' so the Scirocco suits my personal needs well from a size / passenger / boot size perspective, it's just the engine I need to bottom out, must have DSG...

I've grown used to the characteristics of a Diesel and i'm not adverse to that at all, so either of the TDIs would indeed make good sense and be a natural progression for me.

I have spent some time reading some threads extolling the virtues of the 170 (my preferred) but is the 140 that poor or is it that the comparison is of course between that and it's more powerful sister??

It's 10PS up on what I drive so that's a good start but is it really a poor relation?

I may just have opened a can of worms on my fourth post but I really am struggling on this, 140s are for more prolific second hand which is good but is that a bad sign??

reason there are more 140s is because there are more ex lease company cars around given the CO2

The 140 has plenty. I've never felt it's lacking. The 170 has 20% more, obviously, but the 140 will spank your mundano. Test drive both if you're not sure.

I think the choice between the 140 & 170 depends on the type of road you drive on most. If you do most of your mileage on the motorway, then I would say the 140 is more than adequate and little it gained from having the 170. The 140 obviously offers better fuel economy, Though having driven 170' diesels for the last 5 years I could bring myself to losing that extra power. The 170 is a very good engine and the throaty mosey when accelerating brings a smile every time. I would definitely recommend it as it's a very refined engine.

It's a difficult choice as that extra power from the 170 does make a difference on A & B roads. So I guess you need to test drive them to mark your choice.

170 is far better, it is hard to believe 30PS makes so much difference, but it really does. I've had both 140 and 170 Roc, and if you get a 170 over a 140GT, it will be the best £750 you ever spent. 140 is lacking in 5th/6th, the 170 pulls well in every gear and sounds a lot better - the engine note is completely different. The fuel penalty is about 4% for the 170 in my ownership of the 2 cars. For £750 difference it really is a no brainer - you'll get half of that back when you trade in, so it's actually cost you £375 - the price of a remap (and all the insurance hikes that come with having a remap).

I think that I will probably go for the 170 IF I can find one within a reasonable travelling distance and that appears to be the challenge at present. Considering the distance I am prepared to travel / max budget / specs available / preferred colours, I really am limited.

In the meantime, I will blag a test drive in a 140 and try to draw a comparison with what I drive at present, it might just be enough!

Fools 170PS diesel, TSi 210PS Wk45/09 onwards and "R" owners. lol
Not fitted to the 140PS or other engine models.

Lives in the plenum chamber under the front windscreen with its own ECU controller.

RW1: It seems like an April Fools joke when you read what VW have done. Anyways, I still maintain that the price difference between 140GT and 170GT is such that it makes a lot of sense to get the 170.

I came from a 170TDI Golf to a 140TDI Roc before the 170 was out and drove it for 2 years before moving back to the 170 as it was available on teh Roc at that time.

There's nothing wrong with the 140, it's just that the 170 is so much better in a car that has sporting protentions. I test drove the 140, albeit a manual and went straight back out in a DSG 170 for a 45 minute test. The test for both cars was a quite steep bit of dual carriageway. The 140 didn't slack and didn't need to change down but the 170, again not dropping a gear, just simply murdered the hill. Both cars hit the bottom of the hill at 60 in 6th and the loud peddal floored. The 140 topped out a 70 and was still pulling but the 170 was well over 90. The salesman who was with us said that the 170 would outpull the 210 petrol in 6th on the hill and it was his suggestion to do the hill.

With 16k miles on the clock mine just seems to be getting quicker and quicker.

At the weekend, I drove a 140 (DSG) at a non-vw dealer and was fairly impressed with it.
As mentioned earlier in the thread, I drive a 2006 2.0 130PS Mondeo which is fairly willing but compared to the Scirocco I can most politely describe it as 'Agricultural' but I guess that's what German engineering and 10 years of evolution does for the motoring world?
The Scirocco appeared far more eager to pull and the engine, despite being another diesel felt a lot more refined too, all in all, a very nice experience. I think though I will try to find one with parking sensors as I have them on the Mundane and I have grown used to them.

I will try to get in a 170 as soon as I can to try and draw a comparison with my all too short test drive in the 140, one thing is clear though, whatever happens in the next month of so, I will once again enjoy driving to work which hasn't been the case for many, many years!

I'm probably far too old to drive a Scirocco and I'm sure people will think 'Mid Life Crisis' (or worse) but what the hell, it's the first time in my life I will have enough disposable cash to buy what I want and truly enjoy driving it rather than thinking about the first repayment!

Hi, I’m just turned 50 yr. bought myself a candy white 170 BHP GT 60 plate

best birthday present ever, people just stare...Example, the other day had to move my car in work and the two young girls on reception where actually waiting for me to move it !!!!, so they could have a proper look inside, did offer to take them for a spin (joking)
I was just like you 140 or 170? Didn’t test drive the 140; mind was made up after test driving the 170. But saying that some good reports on the 140 BHP

Hi all.

Not really a thread bump but more bringing you up to speed with current events.

Following your help and advice, today I put a deposit down on a 61 plate 2.0 TDI 170PS DSG with leather, satnav, parking sensors and 19" Luganos, the colour....rising blue.

Took it for a test drive, still haven't stopped smiling!

Will post a pic when I collect next weekend.

Once again guys, your help and this forum have been key in helping me make a decision and I'm very grateful.

Now all I need to do is sneak it past Mrs. W.....
