Scirocco Central

Hi

The location where i lift my scirocco with a garage jack got bent. The whole flange (not just the top) started bending while i was lifting so i stopped and did it from shorter flange next to lifting location. This is the right front flange.

The flange at the lifiting point is a little higher (around 8cm) than the rest of the flange which is around 1 cm along the the sides.
Its the location at where it points down (see picture)

Have you experienced this? Can this be normal?

Did you have both front wheels off the ground with the jacking point or was the wheel nearest the lift the only one off the ground?

I only lift one wheel at the time (like one usually do?). The left wheel was not lifting (lifted).

You are jacking up on level ground???

There is something wrong with that jacking point then. You need to see your dealership as the jacking point is a strong point and clearly there is something wrong.

I could understand if you had lifted both front wheels on the one jack point
I could understand if you weren't on level ground because of the load path direction not being directly downwards onto the jack, therefore a bending moment (force) is introduced.

Had the car from new? If not, has some accident damage repair been done previously. Thinking the sill near the jack point was damaged and weakened.

Certainly not heard of it on here unless someone posts up and not on any VAG cars in the last 3 - 5 years using the Scirocco's chassis platform, ie. Golf VI, Jetta, EOS etc..

RW1, i ended up lifting the car to the side of the marked raised flange, where its only around 1 cm.

Was that a stupid thing to do?

Afraid so, thats not strong enough at that point on the sill length where the lip is 1cm deep. You are lucky if you didn't bend the sill.

This is safer but has not ideal in the absence of the jacking point not being available. I would still put an axle stand under the jacking point as shown for safety despite the problem you have with it. But don't rest the car's weight on it, just touching. The axle stand is then there if the jack sinks or fails for safety reasons. Do use protective marterial between the jack head and the car's running gear. You can see thick cardboard in the photos.

Aren't the jacking points inboard of the seam on the bottom of the sill, rather than part of the seam.

Have you jacked up the car using the seam on the sill rather than the jacking point?

I used this point (the attached picture is borrowed)

I will take a photo tomorrow, don't access to the car today.

What did you use to jack the car up with? VW boot jack? Standard trolley jack with cup?

I used a Standard trolley jack with cup and a rubber protection ((do i need this?)

I didn't even continue to lift, i stopped after i saw it getting bent. I think i was more than half way or something, not sure...

I can even take a picture of the place where i lifted the car, i checked it, its horizontal and ok.

Thats not right and you should have been able to lift it with the Jack & pad shown.

See the 1 cm sill lip to the outside of the bent jacking point. There is some white colouring, ie body blue, white, body blue on the lip itself. Is that white paint or undercoat, or is it dirt? It looks too clean on the side sill unless its white dirt and the camera flash bleaching out the image.

If its under coat, then there is a repair. That should all be blue in colour.

Jacking point shouldn't bend. Its a strengthen point for lifting.

I ended up lifting as where the picture shows (but on the right side), what do you think about that? (I'm showing you the left side because it has a better photoed angle than right)

What should i do about the bent jacking point? I don't have any warranty left.

Don't lift on that shallower lip. As said before you were lucky not to bend it.

It needs investigating as to why its able to bend. There must be a weakness in the surrounding sill area.

The link you borrowed the photo from of mine shows alternative jack points (with care to use padding) on the running gear points but that means you'll need to carry around a hydraulic jack & padding for when you have a puncture.

Seems i did everything correct and it still got bent.

Another question, is it necessary to use the rubber pad on the trolley jack or is the cup on the trolley jack enough?
Thing is, the cup is quiet sharp, so it easily scrapes the coating that is on the jacking point. Does it matter if that coating is scraped?

It seems on the picture you posted, even your coating is scraped and removed. (Where the red arrow points)

As previous, I used thick cardboard you can seen in the other topic linked. So the jack's metal cup did not bite into the Running Gear parts.

LOL..... You'll notice how the tyre is still has unmarked grooves. That photo was taken at 250 miles from new.

I don't lift by the jack points. Used the Running Gear points shown in the posted link until I fitted the Jack Pads (yellow highlight bands).

The "damage" you can see is the camera's flash causing a shadow.
However since, damage to the PVC sealing happens everytime the Scirocco goes for a service. Can't be helped as the PVC underseal cannot take the pressure of the car on the car lift's lift points. Just clean up the damage and get the VW repair PVC underseal tin out,
VW part: D 003 500. Its light grey, so it contrasts with the underbody PVC sealing as the original sealing gets painted in the factory during production.
