Sat Nav queries

Hi guys

Thought it might be useful to have a sat nav queries thread.

Here's my two - let's see if anyone can solve them:
1. The car's true position is very slightly out of kilter with what is shown on the display; this means that the system occasionally puts me on the wrong road! It soon gets it right but its a bit of a pain. Is there a way to set the location on the system? There is with TomTom but I can't find it on the 'rocco system.

2. Is there a quick way to mute the route guidance commands, other than going through volume/navigation etc? I like the map, but th woman gets on my t*ts after a bit!

any help really appreciated.

Good call on that one Jono,

Mine will have sat nav so will be very interested in this, especially as I am paying the equivalent of about 10 standard Tom Tom's for it! I was disappointed to read that it reads slightly out of sync, I know that Sat Nav's can't be absolutely 100% accurate but the fact that it has got you on the wrong road a couple of times must mean there is some error in there.

I was thinking about this, with a Tom Tom you can plug it into your PC and download updates to it easily (for example the regular one that helps it synchronise its lock onto satellites). Is there anyway of doing this on a factory fitted device (I have never owned a car with a factory fit Sat Nav). I assume you can update maps but only by buying a very expensive DVD from VW!

Is there a choice of voice options on there?

Interested to hear further views on this, originally I did not specify it as an option but changed my mind when having read up on it is supposed to be one of the best factory fitted devices on the market (certainly in its class). I do hope it lives up to its four figure price tag, after all some used cars cost less than this option alone

I don't think you will regret the satnav option Skippy. I didn't have the choise as the car I bought was pre-registered, so it came with it! I like it a lot and now prefer it to TomTom. It's much neater and things like autozoom are really good. it works a bit differently, but once you get used to it, it's fine. The postcode search only does the first 4 characters, but it's not really a problem. I like the huge storage for different destinations and the way that you can group them. In my work I visit a lot of different schools and I am just adding them all the time with no limit. The mis tracking is only very occasionally a problem - perhaps I am being picky? It happened to me last week in Bristol when i acccidentally went off route and the nav didn't pik it up for about ten seconds (my error rourte was parallel and close to my correct route!) I am quite tempted to stick the DVD in and see what options it throws up; I doubt it will re-write over everything I have in it without a warning screen to let me run away!

It has lots of nice features - lane guidance (motorways only) auto night vision, auto zoom. The one thing it doesn't have is speed cameras; I have bought a Novus Rider for £90 which is brillinat as it has weekly free updates and warns of mobile cameras too.

To the best of my knowledge there is no way of updating the thing apart from buying a new DVD from VW, which I am sure is an expensive option..... I wonder if three or four of us on here could buy one together (naughty!)

Anyway, hope this blurb helps.

Enjoy!!

Many thanks for that Jono, yes I know what you mean about roads that are parallel and close together, any Sat Nav can get confused in that situation!

I would miss the speed cameras option though, I will perhaps look at that device you have. As for the DVD, we could buy a club DVD, I will ask VW when I pick car up the cost of them, oh and do maps of Western Europe come with it, as we may well take the car to France at some point!

Cheers

Hi Skippy
Yes - full maps of western Europe. i go to France quite often and the sat nav is great there. You don't have to change maps like with Tom Tom, just set the destination in France from when you in the UK and it does the lot including channel crossing!

Thats cool - many thanks Jono.

Looks like you and I are the only ones with running this thread at the moment, I do quite like my gadgets though!

My wife has asked me, can you change the voice on it? She is likly to be quite fussy on things like that

Hi Skippy

Nope - you got the 'smart-tart' and that's it! You can change the language though if you fancy a french or german lady more!

Like you, I love my toys for boys. Do check the Novus Rider speed camera gizmo. I thinks its really neat
http://www.novus-gps.co.uk/Novus_GPS_Rider.php. I got a friend to make up a shaped mount which goes in the tray by the gear shift (non-smoking pack) and it picks up the satelite signal fine - even down there.

I really rate this car; the best I have ever had - better than my Mk V GTi, better that the (two) Toyota Celica T sports..

If I can be of help - just mail me through here...

Jono

Hi Jono,

Many thanks again for your prompt replies, got the laptop on while watching Dancing on Ice

Yes - really looking forward to this car, I think the fact that I and everyone else has to wait so long may have something to do with it. Previous cars of mine have always been from existing stock, although I have never owned a VW, I have been told they are pretty good!

Thanks for the link on the Novus GPS Rider, I will have a look at that!

The only other thing that perhaps I wish I had specified is the parking sensors, but then again I currently drive a Mazda RX-8 where rear visibility is hardly great, so I am well used to driving cars with somewhat less than a panoramic view all round!

Cheers again, think I have about 3 weeks to go, I had emailed the dealer again tonight to ensure I have the ipod/usb connections which seem to have been omitted from quite a few vehicles.
