Having had the car for 4 months I at last managed to switch the DRL's off using the indicator stalk method.

I was so excited I switched them back on and then off again.

Hey you must have an 09 model then.
I thought we'd ascertained that turning them off via the method in the manual only worked on MY2010's.
I have an 09 model with a similar spec to blue roc including Xenons, indicator method doesn't work for me. Can someone do a short vid of the procedure on a car that it actually works on ?

Was talking to a friend with a Mk6 Golf. There's a menu option in the MFD, and you can simply turn them off or on. Why didn't VW just do that for us too?

Mine is a 2009 model with xenon lights.

Previous attempts to turn them off all failed but this time it worked. Probably just a question of technique.

Press indicator stalk fully down to left hand position.
Pull stalk towards you and hold in this position (flashes headlights).
Turn ignition on (do not start engine).
After about 3 seconds there is a ping and the DRL's switch off.

To switch them back on again repeat the procedure with the indicator stalk in the up (turn right) position.

Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,

I have just turned them on and off and on and off again to makesure Im doing it right. Ok, this is the process I followed:-

1) Get in Car
2) Shut doors
3) Put key in ignition ( don't turn on )
4) Turn headlight knob to "0" position - important as it won't work in "AUTO"

A)To turn Off :-

i) left indicator.
ii) pull towards you to turn flash beams on
ii) turn ignition ( dont turn engine on )
iii) wait at least three seconds and you will receive a nice ping :-)

B) To turn On:-
i) Right indicator
ii) Pull towards you to turn flash beams on
ii) turn ignition ( dont turn engine on )
iii) wait at least three seconds and you will receive a nice ping :-)

Thats it, all done.

My car is standard MY2010 with parking sensors only.

Good luck peeps.

Cheers

Steve

So basically all this fuss is because the instructions are written badly and people can't follow them (even dealers!)

I bet no-one even tried to proof-read the manual after it had been translated from German.

Now have my DRL turned OFF following the method above !

As mentioned in the method above the master light switch needs to be in the (0) position to turn the DRL's off. Once you hear the Bing noise you can switch back to AUTO and the lights will function as normal with the dusk sensor. I expect this is going to be a tad annoying for those who have paid the stealers to do it for them! I would ask for your money back if not from the dealer then from VW customer services.

May switch them back on when i get around to buying some decent bulbs that are a closer match to the Xenon main unit.

I knew we would get there in the end, good work! Get this info in the Wiki !

My car is an 09My with Xenons for the record.

Yep. And I bet the same applies to all the mystery surrounding the dipping wing mirror function when reversing ..... or should I not have brought that one up again :D

Can anyone with a 2009MY Scirocco that doesn't have Xenons confirm that the above method worked for them?

I tried it last week and thought i'd cracked it - I heard the "bing", but the bing was from the warning asking me to fill the car (was down to about 40 miles left of fuel) - and it didn't work for me!

NO!!!
Both me and my other half have MY2009 cars.
Both cars have standard lights, one is a 2.0 TSi GT, the other a 2.0 TDi GT
Both have similar trim - Cruise control, reverse warning, winter pack, DAB.
No folding mirror option.
Neither work on the stalk method. I got mine done at the dealer (Arthur Prince) for free.

I too have a 2009MY and just for laughs I just tried the above stalk method and it does not work. I think i will just keep the DR lights for now.

I have a 2009 model and I am sick of people flashing me and saying you've got your headlights on and i've even been asked by the police why I have my headlights on. I asked the service dept at my VW dealers today and he said it is not possible to turn off DRL's and it will be law in uk soon, but personally I think he's talking b****ks as there must be some way of turning DRL's off. I have got to find out as it's driving me nuts. AARRGGHH.

MY2010 model - turned mine off today - dead simple.
However in view of the awful weather at present I think I'll turn them back on again.

Even if you get a bulb that matches the Xenon main unit the light will still go out when the Xenon headlight comes out! Im i wrong? Something else i would like your opinion is whether the leaving home headlights switch on. Mine doesnt and i suppose its because of the xenon!!

It hasn't worked on my 2009 car. :grumpy:

VW really can't have it both ways, either it is a requirement (in which case it shouldn't be possible for any owner to turn their own DRLs off by the stalk method) or it isn't....

Yes the DRL's do switch off when the Xenons come on, but i don't like paying for the Xenons and running round with the yellow DRL for most of the time. The Coming / Leaving home lights do work with the Xenons in exactly the same way they do with the halogen, you have to set them up in the Menu on the (Highline) multi-function computer. To activate the coming home lights you have to flash the headlights after you have turned the car off, when you open the door the headlights will come on. If you have the leaving home lights setup, when you open the car in the dark the headlights come on automatically.
