I get around 38.5 mpg on average.

Which equates to around 420-450 miles per tank. Motorway for 10 miles a day and local roads for 5 miles a day.

Is there something wrong with mine or what!!

So far - (had car 1000 miles - its on 39k)

VERY carefull motorway - 68mpg

average motorway drive -55-56

normal roads - 44mpg

hoon - 33mpg

That does not sound great for a TDI, even my 2.0 TSI can get that by gentle driving, but can only just get 400 out of a tank if conditions are right.

I've had the car less than 2 months and filled it up around 4 times but I would have expected far better mpg for that. I've contacted VW to see what they say. It's actually starting to annoy me!

I'm going to reset the computer and see how that helps... AGAIN!

Ok, I freely admit from the start I am not a technical expert, but how does this sound....

If DSG boxes are comuter controlled as to when they change up and down in Auto mode, if there was an issue with a particular car's software, or a sensor used by the software to decide when to change, then that could affect MPG. Looking back at earlier posts, I refer to the dashboard display for 'suggested change up or down'. There are times when the suggestion is totally inappropriate and it gets ignored.
If you are in Auto mode, then presumably the software makes the choice whether it is right or wrong, hence a bad sensor could mean bad gear selection and therefore labouring or over-revving the engine -> worse MPG.

Surely a dealer would check the engine software is the correct version and bug-free ? (Stop that laughing at the back..)

Can DSG owners perhaps do a quick post here to say when their car changes from 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th etc (and back down again) and at what engine revs, also quoting their average MFD fuel consumption ? That way, anyone with poor MPG can compare the gearbox action of their car against other members and see if that might point to a difference?

Like I said, I am no techie and I have a manual box, so if I am talking horse-apples, I gracefully concede !

Deagol -It sounds like you're trying to compare DSG software maps ? MPG and shift point changes wont tell you anything , there are other equally important variables such as specific throttle position , load, and ambient temp etc - which your 'survey' cant hope to capture.

My cars going into VW next week to diagnose (under warranty) any issues as my MPG is pretty poor as mentioned in ealier posts.

Can any of you post your tank usual range indicated after filling. Mine usually shows a mere 350 miles left although I actually get around a 100 more. Still poor compared to a lot of others with the 170 DSG.

Your tank range varies considerably dependong upon what type of driving has been done prior to filling up but for reference my 170 manual displays between 550 and 650 miles.

When mine definitely needs looking at. It's said 350 from the day I purscahsed it from VW a 2 months back.

Even my R32 would display 350 miles range when I filled up. Sure they haven't gave you a petrol car by mistake:-)

Update:

VW ran their diagnostics, funnily enough they found no issue. I got them to fill the car up as they owed me a full tank. This time for the first time it showed 400 in the range instead of 350. It's getting better. I also used diesel cleaner to see if this helps clean the fuel lines etc

Straight after I did a 130 mile trip down the M1 and the range I got to was 580 an averaged around 54mpg. So hopefully the more I drive the better the mpg will be. I can only assume the last owner gave it some before parting company hence the low mpg values calculated plus the 170 DSG's are just crappy around town.

I'll see what I get out of this tank and let ya'll know!

Doesn't using diesel cleaners invalidate the warranty, sure I read that in the manual?

Have you tried putting in some decent premium diesel fuel in it and some swift long driving to burn out the carbon maybe its just clogged up, 15miles isnt that long to get it up to temperature and burn the carbon deposits out? (Diesel Particulate Filter)

Well VW recommended trying the diesel cleaner and it was purchased from them so I've got that covered. I'm currently on 420miles with around 100 showing in the range. At this point I would usually be in reserve. It would have also been a lot better if I haven't flawed it the other night... I'm going to try v power next fill and see how that does then try normal shell diesel and compare. It's also better around town this tank... Very confusing but I'm not complaining.

Simply revisiting this topic to see how every body is getting on since their original posts.

If it's any indicator, my TDi 170 has just passed 48,000 miles and I went from Cornwall to London and back this weekend. Approx 570 miles round trip and MFD indicated that average consumption across the whole trip was 57.0. Average speeds on the motorway 67 - 70 mph but I did get bogged down in Hendon / Wembley yesterday on the way out of the smoke and back down for home. Occasional bunching and 25 - 40 mph on the M25 orbital carpark.

Car not heavily loaded - a couple of overnight bags and me plus passenger.

Anybody still unhappy with their MPG ?

I THINK when I came back from Gatwick airport from honeymoon doing pretty much 70mph most the way I managed to see 56 as my average over about 450+ miles.
Recent trip to Meadowhall with the wife( and a bag of slate I forgot about in the boot) I was seeing about 48 on average over the 130 ish mile round trip

Blimey, that is good mileage for an original set of P-Zeros. Especially the fronts.

Yes, but most of the mileage was cruising on the motorway. Doubt the current pair will last as.long as I'm now doing shorter journeys.
