I know other people on this forum have had their DRL's switched off, have you also lost Auto lights?

That would piss me off, I would much rather put up with DRL's on all the time. Xenon DRL's look awesome though

I have deactivated DRLs and the Auto lights still work for me

I had a Passat courtesy car while mine was in for DRL switch-off.

The Passat didn't have DRLs and Auto-Lights worked just as they should. Anyone would think they were rubbing my nose in it...

Switched off by VW dealership

After another letter to Customer Service they finally got back to me, by phone, while I was out at work, as usual.

They say that on investigation with their "Technical Department", switching off DRLs will also loose all auto lights functions. They accept that this is not what they initially told me, so as a once only good will gesture they will switch DRLs back on for me...

I don't seem to be getting my message across. I want the DRL's off and the Auto Lights to do what the handbook says they should. Just like the ones on the Passat courtesy car.

I've put this view to Customer Service who say they've done all they can. I've asked them to reply in writing so that I've got that view on paper rather than just as a telephone conversation.

Wondering what to do next....

I've had mine on and off a few time,s even had the fog lights working instead as the DRL's and with them all on as DRls.


Stop hassling deralers about this, they dont care, just get freidnly with somone local who has VAG-COM, or buy it yourself and do it.

Its not rocket science!!!

Andy, can you please help, I have a few queries, which I'm sure you can answer...
- What version of the software do we need? Are 805 or 409 good enough?
- What cable do we need?
- Where in the car do you plug the cable?

Or should I not even be considering it if I have to ask these questions???

You need the full genuine version with can bus

Don't bother with the crap rip off copies and cables on ebay, they aint worth the hassle.

Mine is genuine (bought from ross-tech in america) and its been absolutely fault less, no problems installing it using it or anything.

I've been chasing the dealer and VW about this because they said they could do it, and because I don't think it's an unreasonable request.

A cheaper option might be to look at the list on the mkivs site for someone near you who will do the job for the price of a couple of beers.

Did you get stung for import duty though? - Personally I'd rather get it from a uk seller if possible. Are these guys the only ones who sell the product?

Import duty was changed at the end of '08. You only have to pay up if the item is over £105 now. It used to be £18.

I've got my DRL's switched off...

When I tried the settings suggested by Andy GTI, Scandinavia Active, I found that the DRLs were off while the car was stationary, but came on again when it was moving. I'd initially thought that I'd sorted the problem until I caught sight of the car in a shop window and realised they were STILL on. It seemed to be moded on Handbrake and speed somehow. I have now changed to neither Scandinavia or North America set, and I think the DRLs are now switched off, and the Autolights are now working correctly, and as intended.

A hint for anyone else who's having trouble with this... The ambiet light levels have to be quite high to prevent the Auto Lights function from switching the headlights on. When I first started looking at this I was doing so in my well lit garage. I have eight 5' flourescent lights in a white painted garage, but with the switch in Auto the headlights were always on. It didn't seem to make any difference if I set Scandinavia, North Americ, or neither.

I had to set up a 500W halogen worklight pointing at the front of the car to convince the windscreen mounted light sensor that it was daylight, and finally all of the functions came together. With the 500W worklight on, the car thought it was daylight and turned the headlights off. With the worlight switched off, the car thought it was dark and turned the headlights on.

In North America mode the headlights are on regardless of switch position, or lighting level. In Scandinavia mode (with the switch in Auto) the headlights were off if it was daylight and the car was stationary, in all other cases they were on. With neither North America or Scandinavia set, everything seems to work as it did on the Passat I had as a courtesy car.

As Andy-GTI says, it is simple, so why couldn't VW and the dealer have just done it when I asked?

Anyway, I'm relieved I finally got there.

VAGCOM cable arrived and switched off my DRLs. Now how long with my estimated 0.5mpg saving on fuel consumption will it take me to recover my £260 spend on the cable and software???

Will be happy to help others turn off the DRLs...

Not played with anything else yet. I'll probably have a browse through the features list when I get a chance. I'm going to try to be careful not to 'break' anything. I think the first thing which comes to mind with a 'beep' when locking the car.
Though my priority is to find a way to cover the front storage bin so I can leave my remote control (for parking area) in out of sight, without paying >£50 for a retrofit smoker package (+car dismantling!)

Remote control for what jc74? Garage door opener maybe?

There's a Golf ashtray that'll fit on eBay at the moment, £25 with about five hours to run...

Just search on VW Ashtray and sort by Time Ending Soonest and it should be easy to spot.
