I suspect its more to do with this piece
In contrast to the legislation for regulated pollutants, there was until recently no current EU law which limits the amount of carbon dioxide produced by cars. However, in 2009, the European Parliament passed new car CO2 legislation that sets an emissions cap of 130 g/km averaged over all new vehicles produced by each manufacturer by 2015. The 130 g/km average will be the equivalent of 58 mpg for diesel engines and 52 mpg for petrol engines.
Reaching this goal will be phased in over three years; by 2012, 65% of each manufacturers' newly registered cars must comply, 75% by 2013 and 80% by 2014 and 100% by 2015. An extended target is set to be an average of 95 g/km by 2020. Manufacturers that exceed targets from 2012 onwards will have to pay a penalty for each car registered, which amounts to €5 for the first g/km of over the limit, €15 for the second g/km, €25 for the third, and €95 for each subsequent gram. From 2019, stricter penalties will be introduced with every exceeding gram costing the manufacturer €95.
A low volume car at 187g is an easy win towards the target. Doesn't look good for performance cars in the future.....
Yes but this figure is an overall figure for the companies. Therefore, all the Bluemotion and hybrids that are coming will counter act the performance ones. Plus look at the technology on the latest McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari (what a stupid name!). They are massively high performance and all produce apparently around 200g...

I did wonder about this when VW put this relatively old (and 'dirty') engine in the R. I wonder if VW will bother with another R model when I hear the next Scirocco will anyway have higher output (and 'cleaner' engines)?

It's hardly 'dirty' being euro 5 compliant and apparently also meeting euro 6. Also it's still being sold in the audi tts and golf r convertible.......

will be interesting to see if they release the R given the starting prices for the Mk7 R as follows
R 3dr 6spd manual £29,900
R 3dr 6spd DSG £31,315
rocco in general needs a price cut, leather for free doesn't really cut it

It does look as though someone at VW discovered common sense

i've got the price list on the Golf R and list of standard spec is mightily impressive
i think the way to go is ACC which i loved on the GTI and has race mode and DSG to get the best out of it and i never thought i'd say it

I was even thinking of getting an R next year. With this news, maybe... but I'm still bending towards the A5 (Would love S5, even RS5 - but money etc). Having said that, if a baby is on the cards in the future at some point (I must think ahead) then I'd try to squeeze an S3 Saloon in I think, or even S4 as I think the 5 series Audi's look horrific with 5 doors.
Anyway, This new Rocco. Wonder if prices of 2nd hand R's will go up a little?!?!?

Golf Mk7 R is the front runner for my next car. Good standard kit . Adding DSG and ACC should be fun
But mainly because they do a nice shade of blue...

Just saw on another forum that someone ordered a MK7R with every option apart from the sunroof and it came to an eyewatering £40,500 after an alleged £3,400 discount. He has said he has build week 8. really surprised it's that quick and that he managed to get a discount even with £14k of options

Everything except for the sunroof he says. I've not seen the option list but I do Dynaudio isn't available at launch and park assist is not available at all. I can only assume a set of Recaros is included. From experience when you startbticking the boxes it starts adding up:-)

Last time I made a config of a Scirocco R, with pretty much all option available, they were like 6 - 7000 Euro.
A quick Golf Mk7 GTI configuration shows options (all of them) for around 14K in Euro.

Regarding the R, I had a look in the latest Auto Zeitung today where they had a calender of all 2014 releases. Showed Scirocco AND Scirocco R facelift to be at dealers in August 2014.

I've ordered 3 door DSG with 19s, ACC and Winter Pack in Lapiz Blue
People go made on spec and in reality its stuff i'm not bothered with and like the alcantara/cloth of the standard trim
I got a discount not same % of loaded one but i always think there is a bit of 'billy bullshit' on forums when it comes to discounts

i spoke to brokers but they don't give a monkeys really and never really came back with hard facts and sometimes you end up travelling miles to save the extra cash
i think DSG will bring the best out of this and the adaptive chassis on the MK7 was superb and Race Mode appeals to my mid life crisis
