On your car the dipped beams are the DRLs, hence why you cannot switch them off in any setting other than sidelights. I appreciate it can be confusing but it's normal.

The auto function is really redundant and if you want to check the main beam turn the switch fully clockwise to manually switch your lights on and then check operation. When the lights are on in every other setting they are effectively DRLs and may not allow main beam operation.

Sidelights are the 2 small lights next to indicators.

So, even in the off position, essentially my headlights are on? I can see why all the discussion on here about getting these DRLs turned off! Cheers.

The light sensor is directly underneath the bottom left hand corner of the Parrot(top right of RCD510). It 's not very big - about the size of a pin head. So yes in that picture it is covering the sensor.

Okay, so, Orange engineer comes back Weds. If I get him to move it to the opposite side, will that be okay? Or will there be some other teeny-tiny yet crucial component to cover up...

(Who puts a sensor there anyway? What's wrong with on the windscreen by the rear view mirror? Sheesh!)

Get him to try it without the parrot unit there and see what happens, the other thing is he has damaged some wiring behind the dash I guess, ps you have tried the headlight switch in various positions haven't you ?.

LHD drive car equipment just like the handbrake lever position.

Passenger side will be OK, just further to reach.

And if you think thats daft, drive a UK Mk2 Scirocco with LH gearshift gates/stroke changing, LH brake system, earlies had LH wiper system, LH centre console controls and the list goes on.....

I remember in MK1 Golfs the LEDs in the switches for the heated rear window and fog light could only be seen by the passenger when activated :-)

I'll see what it's like once it's been removed. Hopefully should sort. Going off the photo rob-p provided, it llooks like it's the answer to all the problems I'm having. Well, those relating to the car, anyways!

Yes, tried light switch in all positions. Permanent headlights (DRLs) doesn't bother me that much, the problem is mainly the difficulty in reading the radio display in really bright daylight - car thinks it's night so dims it. Not good.

That just leaves me with the problem of how to remove the inevitable remnants of the sticky pad thing he's used to stick it to the dash. Any ideas of stuff that'll do the trick without ruining the finish?

Try using the repeated application of a damp cloth with a bit of washing up liquid. Failing that a gentle organic solvent.
But FFS make sure you don't rub any debris in to the light sensor hole

All sorted. Sticky pads weren't that bad and left no residue. As soon as Parrot came off, everything seemed brighter. Now got it between driver's temp control and the radio scanner knob. No probs.

Headlights working fine too: covered up the light sensor* in the windscreen & on Auto, main beam goes on and stays on.

Thanks for everybody's help on thus, I can now get back to enjoying my car!

*I've now twigged that there's two sensors: one for the lights and dash in the windscreen, and that dot for the radio unit's display.

Find someone with vagcom and sort out your drl's. Got mine setup so the dipped are off and only sidelights are on, dippeds come on when light sensor thinks it's too dark. Glad you got the other stuff sorted!
