Everyone is ok, thats the most important thing.

I highly doubt that a cost of £5.3k to repair the car will unlikely be a writeoff, especially when the car is worth £20k.

It was an accident, pure and simple. Trying to say that the other person might have been at fault because they were speeding wont work, and its just plain wrong. The law of the road says give way to others when crossing the carridgeway, not give way to those doing the speed limit!

General rule of thumb for write offs is over 60ish% of the cars value. My wife had a Fiesta written off 5 years ago with repair cost at 63% of cars value but was given a choice of having it repaired. We chose to accept their offer of writing it off. I would expect yours to be repaired providing the estimate is for both parts and labour.

Seems like a lot of work to repair. That back panel after the door and below the door are the main issues. Mainly their location, and shape of that rear panel, too much damage. Like any repairs, pay a bit more and get it done correctly.

If you truly believe your in the right, then fight it. If not, shit happens. Just got to learn from it. At least your alive, drivers side might be a different story.

even the best driver makes mistakes. Look at Alonso or Hamilton etc. Learn from it and just walk away.

another crashed Roc from this forum....the insurance premium may go up another notch.

If they have given a cost to repair of £5.3k then I can pretty much guarantee it won't be a right off. The fact that they have put a figure on it suggests that there's nothing that CANT be repaired that needs to be and at that figure it definitely wont be a right off. Trust me, I know firsthand, thanks to a lorry chariot racing into the side of me and causing £5.7k worth of damage.

I had similar damage to my Mk5 Golf, but was due to granny pulling from a side road into my side.

Damage estimate was 3800, ended up costing them 5800 on a car that was worth about 7000. The insurer said in hindsight they would have written it off.

I reckon they'll probably fix it. You'll be amazed what they can do to make it look as good as new.

Don't forget that the 'value' of the car to an insurance company is not the street value of the car.... i don't know how old your car is but I still reckon it's going to be close, i think they probably will repair though.

If you were not at fault (but you are in this instance) and there was quite a courtesy car cost involved to be paid for by the other party, it might've been a write off.

I had a bus clout my parked 4 week old Golf GT Sport TDI170 (which was £19.5k list price). The damage done looked quite similar to the case on this thread (car was scraped from behind, but damaged mostly the same panels and components.

The cost of repair was estimated to be about £6500, but came in a bit more than that when they conceded taht they would have to replace a bumper that they were just going to repair. The extortionate cost of courtesy car for 8 weeks (yes, they took their time with the repair, even though the parts were available promptly) was about £3500, thanks to the legal arm of my insurance company shafting the bus company's insurance for hire car costs.

So all in, the cost of my claim was £10k. If my car had been a few months older when it happened, it would have been written off. I wish it was, that car was never the same again.

Make sure it gets repaired at a place with a good reputation, "VW approved repairer" is not a measure of quality (workmanship was shocking on my repair) or honesty of it's employees (I had a coat and the top up oil stolen from the car during repairs).

ive had a further update of my roc, insurer now values the damage at £8500!!, so now i have 2 options: 1.of repair or 2.total loss payout, with the latter being the best option.....

Revolver: Do you have GAP insurance?

If not, you need to do your homework and find out just how little you can buy another used Roc of comparable age/pre-crash condition/mileage to go back to the insurers with when they give you a low initial offer.

If you get it repaired then you'll be thinking that it'll not be right afterwards (even if it is). If you get a crap repair, you'll be wishing you took the write-off option.

I have been reimbursed £18000 from my insurer, which I thought was very acceptable! I've been thinking also of a second hand option on a roc, but with my gap insurance covering the remaining costs I might as well buy new! and look forward to building my roc up again! only thing is I have to return my courtesey car tmrw, now that my car has been declared a total loss, and poss long wait for a new roc?!?!?

you've made the right decision, i wouldn't want to own a car with that much side damage, also come trade in time or selling the thing could become tricky, first thing i'd always ask is has it been pranged

issue you face new is lead in times, however, you may get lucky and i am sure there are deals to be done and maybe some unallocated ones

IN uk insurance is so expensive, as so deeply want to f**k customers....

Revolver: You might get lucky with an unsold and unregistered Roc, some people do cancel orders in the current climate. At the moment no car manufacturer is building to excess, so you're facing a wait no matter what you buy - my mate has been told to wait 11months for a Nissan Joke  (or is that Juke?) - he has about 9 months to realise what a mistake he will be making and cancel the order!

If you're not completely fussy over colour and spec, you might find one going spare without a buyer.

Or you could buy a well specced Passat CC with the new collision avoidance system?

Frosttt is cancelling their order. Don't know exactly what it is they're cancelling, but you might just be lucky, it could be in an acceptable engine/colour/spec combination for you.
