I'll look forward to reading how you think the 2.0 TDI CR compares with the 1.9 TDi PD.

Well I went to the dealer on Saturday, and as usual I'm only half happy...

The Daylight Running Lights are still switched on. The mechanic showed me the VAG programming software, but couldn't find an option on there to switch off the DRLs. He said the software had recently been updated so maybe VAG have removed the facility to switch off DRLs? Mechanic said he'd investigate. We tried the Handbook procedure for switching off the DRLs, and that didn't work either. The DRLs are the one "feature" on the car that really annoy me. :grumpy: The mechanic said he'd investigate and get back to me.

I've been told that the "Mid-Line" computer fitted to the Non-GT cars does not allow me to access the "Settings Menu", but at least the mechanic set the options I wanted to change, Auto-Lock on, and unlock when the key is removed.

The wipers have just about fixed themselves now. Two weeks of driving to work in bad weather seems to have done the trick.

The iPod cable was ready and waiting for me. There was no explanation of why it wasn't in the car in the first place, just makes you think they're trying it on, which really isn't what you expect when you're constantly being told that VW are a premium brand.

Oh yeh... Forgot about the "Smokers Pack". The sales guy said it couldn't be retro fitted. Service say it can, but...

They've quoted £85 for the trim pieces that must be swapped, and £115 in labour.

I've bought a copy of the ETKA (?) VAG parts software which I installed on my PC at the weekend. The parts that service say are required look to be more extensive than I think are necessary from looking at the diagrams. I might just buy the one unique part at £29, and then see where i go from there. The other trim pieces that service said were required look to be either common to the non-smoker, or additional options.

I want to add this if it's possible, so please keep us informed as to how you get on with it. Also want those damned daytime lights switched off! Cheers.

DRLs seem to polarise opinion.

Personnaly I don't like DRLs (on cars). Lights are for when it's dark, or when visibility is poor. I have bikes as well as cars, and on the newer bikes the headlights on all the time. Where this is the case they just don't give me a switch to turn them off. As a biker, I'd prefer day time headlights to be the exception rather than the norm so that car driver have a double-take when they see a headlight. Once all vehicles have lights on during the day it stops being the attention grabber it is when they're unusual.

That's the only reason i wonder about the wisdom of it too, as car drivers we actually rely on Bikes having lights on to some extent, to make them more instantly visible in the mirrors. Only applicable during the day though, you still have to look out for Bikes at night.

The only difference i can think of though, is during the day when going through lines of stationary traffic, where the lights help car drivers out the most. There could be more accidents with cars changing lanes as bikes go between lanes in the traffic. As far as i can fathom, in any other situation you're no less visable if all vehicles have their lights on aswell and it shouldn't matter if it's a bike or a car coming, as long as you can see it. Bikes have to be able to see cars too, and 'looked but didn't see' accidents at junctions and roundabouts are very common (especially with modern A-pillars!).

Hi TurboTrev,

I ordered the parts for the Smokers Pack last Wednesday. The main component is on back order at the moment, so I guess there are a lot of people buying the bits to fit the smokers pack themselves.

There are five parts that make up the Smokers Pack, but as I'll not be using it as an ashtray I've not ordered the cigarette lighter, or the removalble tray. The three parts I've ordered are at the left of the the diagram. Total price was £53 (inc VAT) which was less than the dealer quoted me when I asked them for a price to supply and fit a Smokers Pack. At that time they wanted £85 (plus VAT) for the parts, but that would have included the lighter and the removable tray.

They're going to call me when all of the parts have arrived, but can't say when that will be because of the back order.

I drove down to London and back, to Chelsea, on Sunday. I still haven't seen another Scirocco on the road. The car got quite a few looks on The Kings Road, where nice cars are nothing unusual.

It seems Scirocco's are still pretty rare... :vibes:

The parts for the Smoker's Pack have come and been fitted. :)

I've put the details in a new thread, "Fitting a Smoker's Pack" on the General Issues forum.

DRL's are still on. VW haven't replied to anything in writing, or by eMail, just vaugue telephone calls about them contacting Technical... :grumpy:

It’s seven weeks since my Scirocco was new, 5000 miles done now, so it’s time for a review…

The engine has freed off a bit now, I was a little concerned initially that the performance was going to be well short of my old Ibiza TDi 130 Sport. Now I think they’re on a par, but the VW just doesn’t feel as fast. The Scirocco does like colder weather too.

Engine oil consumption is very low, good news considering the price of the Long Life Oil! The car has averaged 47 mpg (fuel not oil!) over the last 1500 miles, about the same as the Ibiza, and OK for how it’s being driven.

I’ve got rid of the open cubby hole in the centre console by fitting an ashtray, much happier with that, and having done it, a little confused as to why the dealer thought it so difficult.

The Daylight Running Lights are switched off, which is good news. But I’ve lost all the Auto Lights functions. Hoping to have this sorted at some point in the not too distant future.

The unpainted plastic grill is looking very rough and sorry for itself. The car is going in next week for a new grill to be fitted. Hoping that the new one is made of better stuff than the old one so that it doesn’t happen again.

I’ve got a few minor mods in mind for the car for the future. I do like to have a project on the go.

Overall I’m happy with it, and quite smug they’re still fairly rare round here… :nod:

I'm curious about what the differences are between the 140 TDi CR engine and the 170 engine. If there are no mechanical differences I'd think about going up to the 170 spec, but not really interested beyond that.

What I do miss is the low down pull of the old 1.9 TDI PD 130 engine. The 2.0 engine just doesn't pull like the 1.9 did at low revs, and doesn't come on anything like as strong. The 2.0 is much more like a petrol to drive.

True, 2.0 TDI is very different from the 1.9, usable in a wider range, but without the brutal pull. Also, the scirocco is extremely stable on the road and the effect is you dont really feel the speed, although its there ;) I'm tuning mine to 177 km, 410 Nm.

I'll be interested to read how you get on with the chip upgrade.

I'm happier with the car now. DRL's switched off and Auto lights working as they should. Open cubby hole replaced with an ashtray. Cheap'n'nasty cup holder replaced with the covered cup holder from the Golf. and a couple of further upgrades in the pipeline.

The performance continues to improve, but the characteristics of engine are so different to those of the 130hp 1.9 it's taking some getting used to.
