Thanks. That does help very much. Im thinking of wrapping the top and bottoms of the springs in rubber to try and quiten it down. I have however found out that if I turn the steering wheel like I would treat a woman it doesn't click.

I've fitted some rubber inserts to each coil (made by tein I think) to stop the springs chattering together but it made no differance. Although this more a problem on the h&r's as the coils almost touch.

You obviously do not understand the problem if you think it is the coils touching.

It is the top mount bearings!!!

Even though replacing them makes no differance!?

They've obvoisluy not fitted them correctly, or when taken apart, not spotted anything wrong and refitted the old ones.

I've changed out 6 of these top mounts now on various cars and it always solves the prob.

The bearings are dirt cheap.

Bought two genuine VW units for £8 each at the weekend.

But hey, if you won't listen to advice, you keep wrapping your springs in rubber if you think that'll fix it. :)

You may have noticed I said wrapping the springs makes no differance but I'll take yor advice and get the 4 th set of top mount bearings fitted but not at Vw!

Also noticed hat problem only occurs when the car is loaded or if the front wheels are on uneven ground.

Mines gone in then, the tech came in the car with me and sat in the back, they have a road nearby with rough ground and thank god he heard the noises. He seemed to think it was the tailgate but we shall find out soon!

Ok, got mine back after two visits. They've put it down to "Release fuel tank and re-position and insulate heat shield." Whatever they have done seems to have cured the rattle/knocking from the rear. Hope this helps others!

That's the same as they put on my work report after having the rear looked at, seems to have done the trick, but not sure it will help the people with dodgy front springs.

I did use to get a slight clonk on the front on full lock. But since I've done more miles, it no longer occurs. A few little and intermittent noises (not problems or faults) have gone since I gave it some on track.

Took my car in for a service yesterday and got the master technician to finaly hear the knocking noise. :D And with the steering off centre its not looking good. The technician seams to think its more to do with the steering rack than the suspention :? Will find out when I get a call later today how much damage has been done and what they are going to do about it.

Suspention knocking

Post by langley182 »

Top mounts. Mine were clunking 4 months from new. Rather than getting them replaced and it happening again in 4 months I Took them apart when I put my coilovers on, cleaned them out and packed them with grease and heavily covered them with grease to prevent ingress. They have been smooth and quiet ever since.
I was shocked as to how dry and grease free they where when I removed them!!

My Roc is getting a new steering rack as the master technician thinks the knocking isn't the suspention but a component in the steering system.

Monkeyman: Steering rack is a common VAG issue with the Golf platform cars (Leon, A3, Golf), my Mk5 Golf went through 2 of them. Dull thud when you first move from a full lock (like reversing into a parking space).
