Picked mine up in Oxford this morning then drove the 100ish miles down to Shepton in Somerset averaged just over 53mpg. Took it on a real granny run from Shepton to Keynsham which is about 20 miles and had 62.8 showing for that trip. Was suprised to see over 60 to be honest, not complaining though!

Hi Ian,

Hope you are enjoying the car. On the assumption that yours is new out of the box, can I point you at the posts on running in? I'm not being patronising, I just recall my petrol Golf GTi T that had too much "granny run" from new and was always a bit slow over the eight years afterwards. Getting 45mpg from the 1.8T engine was no compensation when the wife's 1.6 Polo would pull away from me when in convoy ( :grumpy: )

My Scirocco has had some fairly brisk running in action - letting the engine warm up followed by some gear changes that allow a "bit of exercise" up to 2,750 or 3,000 revs before changing up. I often ignored the Highline computer "change to gear X now" message when it wanted me to change up sooner that I thought was good for the engine. Now we are over the magic 1,000 miles, I am happy to go to 4,000 + rpm when occasions demand it, as well as pootling at 1,200 to 1,500 when they don't. Once well and truly loosened up (see earlier post on this thread - presumably that will be in another 'fix' months time :lol: ) I will be expecting to get mid 50's to 60 mpg on a calm driving day, with early to mid 50's when there are caravans to be dealt with.

(I've nothing against caravanners if they are sensible, it's the ones who pull out in front of you plus the 'van and forget the effects on their acceleration when towing ! My car's brakes are good, but I prefer to keep my adrenaline levels below the red line. But this is for another thread, I'm sure.....)

Hello Deagol

No need to worry, my cars got a tad over 14k on the clock now. Joys of being the dealer demonstrator I guess! Yesterday I was just having a little comparison as I've done that route many times in various cars of mine and hire cars. The best my Mercedes C Coupe ever did over that run was 45mpg, managed 50 in a Ford C-Max hire car and about the same in a Mondeo diesel.

After having my sensible head on I then had a play with the paddle shift on a nice section of dual carriageway with a few round abouts thrown in.

The car has a decent turn of pace when needed.

It'll be interesting to see what difference a Revo map would make. I may visit my local Revo dealer to see if they still do one of the maps you can try for 5 hours or so.

I got 83.7 mpg today over a three mile stretch before I went up a long winding hill. The reason for the low consumption was :

1) The road runs alongside a river so is fairly flat;
2) Holiday traffic was trundling along at 30 - 35 mph on a road that is normally 50 / 60 mph;
3) Lots of oncoming traffic meant that normal progress was impossible.

IT WAS SO DULL !

The total 11 mile trip worked out at closer to 64 mpg due to some open road later on :)

I was driving like an old lady (no, not constantly in second gear!) on the last but one tank full of fuel, purely for experimental purposes. It was solely to and from work 7 times (with average speed cameras and lots of traffic I was hardly missing out on much sport!). I averaged 41.1mpg (calculated) whilst the car was telling me 43.4mpg. Not bad for a 2.0L Petrol.

I have driven my car a lot (for me) over the bank holiday. The max. I saw was an average of 45 mpg when sitting behind a lorry at 40mph in 6th! On a run today, mainly doing 80-85mph I was pleasantly surprised to see average of 38mpg :)
